Working parents are in a tough spot these days juggling child care, home schooling and full-time work. The situation has become critical as many school districts have announced they will not fully resume in-person classes this fall as coronavirus cases continue to surge. So parents are getting creative, forming pods with other families to share the cost and burden of home schooling.
Former math teacher and tutor Jeffrey Hahn is advertising his services as a pod teacher on his Brooklyn neighborhood forum. His base rate for pod-teaching is $250 a session, and he said hes already getting interest.
It ends up being priced in a range thats close to what private day care or private child care might look like, he said.
I honestly think public school systems shutting themselves down for the coming year are shooting themselves in the foot.
Working couples are used to paying daycare anyway. If the cost of privately educating your children is close to an amount you were going to pay anyway--for babysitting--why not?
Plenty of parents will find their children are not only better educated, but don't have to deal with the negative aspects of public school.
A year from now, I expect the calls for "the money to follow the student" (in other words vouchers).
We need a federal incentive for School Choice. Vouchers. Get the kids out of government schools.
Absolutely!
Yeah, if I wanted my homeschooled kids to have the “public school experience,” I’d just bully them every day and try to sell them drugs in the bathroom...
granted, my grandson is in the autism spectrum but I asked him what he thought when he found out that there would be no more going to school this year, he was ecstatic....he was so relieved......
that's not well rounded, your leaving out you should be telling them to question their sex and worship the environmental Gods.
sharing homeschooling and care. A great concept.
I know families who do it with one parent a day each week rotating with three families.
Each parent teaches certain subjects and take field trips
Done by noon and the kids play all afternnon.
Always thought this would eventually happen...given the absolute bloatedness of public schools.
“are shooting themselves in the foot”
Yes. They are.
govt teachers be damned...
in todays daily rag, there was a huge article about how afraid the teachers are to go back to school and face all this disease...
gee, try doing actual work like taking care of the sick and dying in a hospital....
Hmm? Sounds like back to the future; the one room school house!
... but we idle parents are finding life a breeze these days.
"Go outside and make an animal friend. Come home by 5:00."
"It's too hot!"
"Okay, I have some Uncompensated Household Tasks for you."
"I'm going out!!!"
But in their own words, they can’t risk a single child or teacher’s life.
Exactly. I gained nothing from experiencing thievery and vulgarity.
Yes, no need for it to be expensive, if you pick your friends carefully.
Yes.
During her visit to clean my place last Thursday the school issue came up in our chat. I asked her what she planned on doing. Her answer: she and several other moms formed a co-op to educate the kids. They're using curriculum provided by online learning and the moms take turns supervising and assisting the kids with completing their daily learning tasks.
They used this same approach starting last March when the schools closed down here and learned a lot from it. They're taking what they learned, making some adjustments and doing it again. They think they'll be successful and the kids get interaction time with others their age at the same time.
I've heard co-workers with kids doing the same thing here. I think we're witnessing a revolution in childhood education and if I were a professional teacher in the public schools, I'd be afraid for my job in the coming years.
It's time for a brave political candidate who has no chance of winning to stand up, call himself a Democrat, and support the NEA and all these school closures.
"We need to keep the schools closed so poor Americans have no chance of keeping up with wealthy Americans who can be educated at home through online classes."
If this approach gets enough traction, you'll have Democrats running around opening schools at gunpoint.
Well they should. I doubt the school districts can justify the amount of tax money they receive from property tax and other sources if school is continually closed. People will start demanding an appropriate cut in property tax. Vouchers only let the State handle your money and siphon off a portion. Axe the tax and save money all around.
