Trump says coronavirus crisis will ‘get worse before it gets better,’ pleads with Americans to wear masks
Fox News ^ | 7/27/2020 | Andrew O'Reilly

In his first official press briefing on the coronavirus pandemic since April, President Trump on Tuesday admitted that the public health crisis is likely to worsen as cases surge across the country and asked all Americans to wear masks in public.

While Trump hailed his administration’s response to the pandemic and the work toward developing a vaccine, he bluntly disclosed what many Americans already know: that the crisis is likely to spread more before it can be contained.

“It will get worse before it gets better,” Trump said of the pandemic that has infected close to 4 million Americans. “That’s something I don’t like saying but it is.”

Trump’s comments come after weeks where he either downplayed the virus’ continued spread or focused on other issues – from unrest over racial injustice in American cities to the removal of Confederate statues – despite cases of COVID-19 surging, particularly, in parts of the south and southwest.

Noting the concerns among many of his supporters that facial coverings impinge on their personal freedoms, Trump pleaded with Americans to wear masks out in public to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“We’re asking everybody when you’re not able to socially distance to wear a mask,” Trump said.

There is an element of that to the masks. CDC effed-up when the pandemic hit because they were relying on handouts from WHO. They got caught with their pants down.

Now if the virus fades they’ll take credit for imposing masks. If it doesn’t they’ll blame us for failing to wear the masks.

It’s Bureaucrat 101.

Fair enough. And about what I expected.

Towards the beginning of Covid, I went to the CDC web site and used their search. Search terms: Diversity, Transgender, and Climate Change.

Thousands of hits resulted, and a cursory look revealed quite a lot of content. That content doesn’t come cheap in staff time or money. All of these I see as totally out of the scope of a mission focused CDC.

They shouldn’t have secured the N95 supply for hospitals by lying to the public.

However, the last week in February and the first two weeks in March DID reveal the unbelievable truth that we could not order, and would not be able to order for months to come, the vital supplies needed to care for the sickest COVID patients.

It would have done Trump a world of good to seize the 3M plants in Minnesota and elsewhere and send in the military to produce 3M-1860 masks in volume, while outlawing export.

It would have taken months for the courts to stop him, presuming he would ignore lower court orders, and even this Congress would not have dared.

And try telling a nurse who has to stay in a negative pressure hot zone for a 12 hour shift that “masks don’t work”.

600 nurses are dead because of this incredible screwup.

How long has work been underway on coronaviruses? Are there any?

You’re talking N95 masks vs. bandanas. Quite literally apple’s and watermelons.

There ARE large experimental differences between N95; level 3-2-1 surgical masks; procedure masks, and cloth.

But if you don’t have a dog in the civil rights fight (I don’t), it is observable that universal whatever masking (OK, in a Confucian society with 100% compliance) is associated with decreasing rates of SARS CoV 2 transmission.

Yes, nurses who wear bandanas for a 12 hour shift caring for an intubated COVID patient are more likely to get infected than if they have a new, fit-tested 3M 1860 mask.

But that’s not the right model for walking down the street in Bergamo in February 2020.

#2 is close...aren’t masks supposed to protect us? Isn’t that why they impose ‘mandates’? Surely these 67,000 were unmasked? Right?

“We’re asking everybody when you’re not able to socially distance to wear a mask,” Trump said.

Hasn't that been the message for the past 3 months? It's not like were hearing it for the first time.

It’s based on the methods used by the countries in Western europe, north america, brazil and india. There are few differences, but nothing that would account for larger swings. Based on the data, the USA is between #7 to #11 depending on your interpretation. Going by the clearest, the USA is at #8 in terms of per million

Different methods. Different criteria. Different and flawed testing. Hell in this country county by county different. Yet you find these global statistics credible? Astonishing.

My favorite analogy is banging a nail with a screwdriver, not using a tool correctly can be just as bad, if not worse, than no tool at all.

he gathered his medical team together and asked “What do you need to get this under control?” And they answered “More testing and have them wear masks for a few weeks”.

IMO, that's the wrong answer McFry.

The right answer IMO is the pandemic is no longer about "COVID-19" but "COVID-911" - a full-court-press political attack on Trump and America.

They're counting car crashes and common colds as "COVID-19" occurrences. It's become a political attack on Trump and America. That should be the answer, and Trump should act accordingly, calling our the liars and the "fake reports" as he has done so effectively against the "fake news".

I'm not impressed with Trump's advisors - IMO they suck.

We know the Left has completely gone off the rails and turned very radical. They are lairs who call the truth lies. The purveyors of false information call the truth "false information. Case in point is the link below which Facebook calls "false information" but you can still watch by hitting the "See Video" on the bottom right.

I am disappointed at people taking their mask on and off without washing hands or changing the mask altogether. Good job stupid, all the germs you just expelled into your mask you just put on your face and back into your body!

When the Left calls something “false” you know it almost certainly is true.

The Leftist stamp of “False Information” is really a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

Works for me - the reason for the spikes is corona-fatigue and folks are realizing that it’s not nearly as deadly as they made/make it out to be...call it a “protest” and maybe it will be reported favorably.
The sooner we get maximum exposure/cases, the sooner it will become a non-deal.

In hindsight, putting together the pieces, it appears the Trump pivot on masks has been in the works for a couple of weeks at least.

I hate to say this, but the visit to Walter Reed now appears to be a staged event intended to provide the photo op. Anyone who didn’t like it could be shouted down with “Geez, he’s in a hospital, give him a break”.

And then Rush Limbaugh started making comments about how Trump looked “bad-ass” in a mask. We know Trump and Rush talk weekly.

And then a bunch of Republican governors who you never would have expected this from started issuing mask orders (I know some West Virginians who were apoplectic...that state has experienced a smaller virus impact than nearly any other). Clearly they had been tipped that Trump was about to change positions and they did not want to be left out on the limb.

Kristi Noem has the courage of her convictions, it seems.

Rush often gets it wrong.

Mentally, Trump needs to be an “outsider” again.
