New York City needs more arrests. More arrests in the subways. More arrests in housing projects. More drug arrests. More arrests of gang members.
And it isnt alone.
If theres one lesson from the unrest and anti-police agitation in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, its that poor minorities living in distressed neighborhoods pay the highest price in fear and in blood when the cops retreat and the worst elements feel emboldened.
The spikes in shootings in cities around the country havent taken place in high-end neighborhoods, not in Billionaires Row in Manhattan, not in Buckhead in Atlanta, not in Forest Glen in Chicago.
No, they blight the most marginal neighborhoods and make everyday life a hazard for people who have no option but to live in a tough place. The last couple of months should have made it obvious that what these people have to fear most is not the cops or white supremacy but the violent, vengeful, and heedless young men in their midst.
Stopping or discouraging the cops from disproportionately policing these neighborhoods isnt a blow for justice. Its an obstacle for upstanding, low-income citizens who are trying to lead decent lives and shouldnt have to routinely hear gunshots or worry every day about their kids getting shot.
Consider New York City. The New York Times ran an extensive piece the other day on the spike in shootings in the city. Clearly, a driver of the violence is a marked reduction in arrests:
Arrests have declined drastically this summer, falling 62 percent across the board for the last four weeks compared with the same period last year, police data show. Narcotics arrests fell 85 percent. Detectives in the gang unit made 90 percent fewer arrests.

Not our problem. This should be an ad run everywhere by the GOP - “defund the cops, you get screwed - here’s examples. A vote for Dems is a vote for defunding is a vote for chaos.”
But the GOP is too stupid to do that.
“Guess What? We Need More Police in Urban Neighborhoods, Arresting More People. Shootings and other crimes spike in the poorest neighborhoods when cops pull back.”
As that man-about-town would say, in his best drawl;
“Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!”
Not necessarily.
This is a good way to ‘Thin the herd’.
The Left loves Darwin’s Theory so much. This is just putting it into action....................
Even people that are forced to live in the toughest neighborhoods can vote their way out of this misery, if enough of them wake up.
I’m shocked!! (sarc)
This is the real tragedy of what we are seeing play out in urban communities.
As the police pull back and criminals are released these communities will suffer. Children will suffer and we will lose another generation to inner-city violence and society will pay for it the rest of our lives.
Prior to the craziness this year with the virus and now the Marxist anarchy, the trajectory in these communities was as positive as it had been in a very long time. Outside of the usual suspects (Chicago and Baltimore) law and order as well as economic conditions were improving under President Trump. His poll numbers showed that he was getting some credit. This idea is intolerable to the left and here we are.....
There are no cops and no crime in my neighborhood. I wonder why.
Wait...police...arrests...crime goes down...who knew there was a connection?
Natural selection.
Thin the herd.
Too stupid is right! Any idiot would know that can’t work
Who cares at this point? Let them kill each other that’s less Democratic votes.
I am on Staten island which is part of New York City and none of this has changed crime in my area at all. Virtually no violent crimes.
But let the other boroughs burn.
Like I said each one shot dead is one less Democratic vote.
I’m sure the vast majority of people here, the neighborhoods are just fine
Fewer Police = More Crime
Do you want your neighborhood to have fewer police?
Do you want your neighborhood to have more crime?
The Democrats do.
President Trump is not a Democrat. He supports Law and Order.
If some of the bad guys go to jail, mayors and governors let em out.
Other bad guys enjoy jail since its an easy life.
Bottom line, theres little incentive to follow the rule of law.
Do you really think the chaos will be confined to the poorest neighborhoods?
Wait a while - once they’ve destroyed their areas they’ll come for yours.
Spent a rather uncomfortable week on a Los Angeles roof with a rifle in 1992 learning that one, and it was confirmed again with the recent riots - where they looted and burned parts of Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive.
You forget that the dead vote Democrat, too.
An ad along the lines that I propose would scare the security moms into voting Republican, too.
There should be a mandatory additional 10 year felony for any person resisting arrest or talking back to an officer. We need to reduce these bs confrontations where people then claim police brutality. Also, police again need to be issued blackjacks, billyclubs and nightsticks. Talk back to an officer, get a club to the head.
You do know that this logic has lead to Michelle Malkin being beaten with batons with police approval, right?
No, we do not need to resume issue of blackjacks, billyclubs or nightsticks. We DO need to issue and require locked-on usage of body cams to remove claims of police brutality and misconduct in instances where none exist.
The police should have clubbed the BLM people down. We need federal police and troops in these areas and to declare martial law.
Another example of someone who needs to get clubbed and thrown in prison.
