The re-election of Andrzej Duda as Polands president this week was by the narrowest of margins and has sent liberals in the country into a tailspin. Dudas campaign pivoted away from pro-welfare messaging to one dominated by family values and hostility to the countrys LGBT communities.
Christian Davies was covering the election for the Guardian and tells Rachel Humphreys that the result now clears the way for Polands ruling populists in the Law and Justice party to continue their politicisation of independent institutions such as the judiciary and the media.

1. Poland is a semi-Presidential government, with the President a little more than a figure-head, but not much more. He can't propose legislation. He can veto it, but can be overruled.
2. The president, Duda is a member of Prawo i Sprawiedliwość which is socially conservative, but BIG government, more welfare and socialist policies, so not completely 'right-wing'
So I suppose if the Left won, then it would be united?
These are the types of headlines the media uses to pull a fast one on people.
Of course had the left-wing Marxists squeaked out a win then the Guardian, aka Pravda, would have hailed it as a great unifying victory.
So, if I understand - if “Right Wings” win, the country is divided.
I’ll bet if the “Left Wings” won (a term that the Guardian would never use), the country would naturally be united.
The Guardian is such a joke, although their writers are much more accomplished than the NYT or WaPo clowns are.
If only the Communists were still in control, the country would be united.

This sounds familiar.
In America, Europe, and in the rest of the world the Enemedia plays the same game and savages right-wing populism as divisive while touting the positives of far left political movements.
“the result now clears the way for Polands ruling populists in the Law and Justice party to continue their politicisation of independent institutions such as the judiciary and the media.”
I’m sure they meant to say “de-politization” of the judiciary and the media.
Thanks for posting, but would you give us some more info, as Poland is one of the countries we really respect these days. In particular, are they really split down the middle like those results seem to point to, or did conservatives split their vote earlier and then acted like a bunch of spoiled brat FReepers and sat out the final election like 3 year olds that don’t get their way?
If Poland is really split down the middle, it will be tough for the conservatives there to hold their ground much longer, given all the tools of the Left.
why the quotes around family values?
All stories with editorial comments in the headline are propaganda.
GUARDIAN HEADLINE: “””Poland divided as right-wing populists win again”””
THE REALITY HEADLINE: “””Poland CONTINUES ITS BRIGHT FUTURE as right-wing populists win again
Except for FReepers is anyone else actually reading the garbage spewed by the LOW LIFE MEDIA?????
The Guardian is a far-left publication.
This has to be a bitter blow for Yurps. They really got their hopes up this time - but Polish patriots won again.
Zippidy Duda!
Poland divided because of the Right?
So I suppose if the Left won, then it would be united?
When Trump won in Nov. 2016, the ‘Resistance’ was declared. His Presidency was to be never ‘normalized’ and everything he did was wrong. Orange Man Bad!
See how it works?
the candidates and the results in the first round were
Duda - socially conservative, big government, welfare state and economically leftish. 43.5%
Trzaskowski - socially leftard, bigGISH government, lower welfare state and economically rightISH 30.5%
Szymon Hołownia - from neither of the two big parties, an independent. Socially mildly conservative, rightISH, smallISH government, welfare state and economically neutral 14%
Krzysztof Bosak - socially conservative, SMALL government, small welfare state and economically right -- THIS guy is the true RIGHT candidate and the person I voted for in the first round (I held my nose and voted Duda in the second) 7%
Kosiniak-Kamysk - socially conservative, big government, big welfare state and economically leftISH - this is the farmer's party - he won 2.8% of the votes
Biedron - socially left, big gov, big welfare and economically LEFT - this guy represents the former communists he got 2% of the votes
The Marxist left-wings are not even in parliament
for the courts - the current gov says that the constitutional court appointees should be appointed by the parliament - just like in Germany or the USA. The opposition say no, you'll put the judges you want there...
for the media - the aim is to reduce foreign ownership of media to below 49% - right now, with the exception of doRzeczy, Sieci and Gość niedzielna, the media are owned by foreign houses and don't necessarily think in the country's best interests
Don’t look so divided to me.
Camptown ladies voted for her too.
