Apparently not even anyone on the long term sick list so far, too.

The heat from the fire has weakened the hull
==========+=======

And if it got that hot all the cabling/wiring & HVAC stuff is gone.

The major issue for me is whether the hull below waterline is now admitting water from burn-throughs or stress-induced fractures. If that is going on, the best-case scenario is for the ship to sink at pierside. The worst case is for it to capsize at pierside. Even if such leaks are not occuring now, they might occur later as the interior fire continues.

Could you post a link to your source about the fires being out?

Its amazing just how much damage a warship can take and NOT sink.

It’s in the last update to the article linked - the ship is no longer emitting smoke, and pictures are up.

The Chinese still have them. They still have Freon-based AC systems too. Montreal Accords? Too expensive. Only applies to "gwylos" (Foreigners) anyway.

Had some fool accidentally trigger the fire suppression system in a facility and it blew out all of the raised floor panels. I guess the Halon system was slightly overcharged.

Nobody died. We all just ran like hell to get out of the mist.

Actually, even the Chinese stopped all of that more than a decade back. They’re on HFCs now - which is why all the guys with bootleg Chinese R-12 disappeared.

A typical (original) Halon fire suppression system is actually human-life safe. The problem is that if you use a “Halon bomb” you then can actually push all the other gases out of the way with the shockwave. Like the oxygen you kind of need to survive. :P This is why the original Halon systems were originally so wildly popular everywhere in the 80s for datacenters, office buildings, anywhere they could be integrated.

Halon was discontinued because it “might” affect the ozone layer, not because of any alleged lethal effects.

There’s plenty of Soldiers and Marines who’ve been exposed to Halon over the years with no adverse effects.

See my followup post above. Halon’s not inherently lethal, but if you use a “Halon bomb” the near explosive gas dispersal can displace air, just like any other gas dispersed that way.

Spktyr: "Accidental fire is still the leading likely cause.
This does happen - in the last few years, the Russians lost a carrier to shipyard fire..."

Maybe... but your examples suggest the question: how is it possible that all three navies suddenly "forgot" how to prevent "accidental" fires on ships?
And how is it they suddenly can't put out such fires?

And how is it that navy ships (navy ships!!) are designed to burn uncontrollably, with impossible to extinguish fires?

I don't get it.
There's way too many coincidences to make sense.

Spktyr: "On May 20, we just ordered a new America-class, the LHA-9."

Are those ships also designed to burn uncontrollably?

The USS Enterprise had a fire that was started by a huffer’s (tow tractor with jet engine starter) exhaust setting off, yep, a Zuni rocket.

That’s stupid because they’d get reassigned to another ship.

People who would set fires on purpose aren't the most stable and rational thinkers on the planet.

Please see your local mental health professional to have your prescriptions adjusted.

The reason these all happen in shipyards is because the ship is shut down for the repairs/upgrades to be made, most of the crew is taken off and the ship is given into the care of shipyard workers. With figuratively none of the regular crew, the normal protective systems powered down or even dismantled as is needed for the work to proceed, the ship is going to be far, far more vulnerable to fire than if everything was buttoned up, a full crew was aboard and full electrical and mechanical systems powered up. And shipyard crews tend to be quite a lot sloppier than military personnel.

This is far from unheard of and affects civilian ship construction/refit as well. This recently happened:

It’s not even the first time that we’ve had a carrier burn in shipyard hands. I give you the USS Constellation fire of 1960: https://www.wnyc.org/story/1960-uss-constellation-catches-fire-brooklyn-navy-yard/

Counterflood and pump some water out, she’ll level up.

The Navy just didn’t have a great experience with those things on shipboard, did they?

That’s kind of a problem with no power and most of the wiring destroyed...

The Essex class had wooden decks for speed. U2B has a discussion on the +/-’s versus the steel-decked UK carriers of the era.

My father’s cousin served on one of the last Essex class carriers. It was doing ASW off of Cape Canaveral during the early space race years.

He has a picture of himself squatting in front of Freedom 7, secured on deck.

Halon was discontinued because it “might” affect the ozone layer, not because of any alleged lethal effects.

Political correctness run amok as a cover story. Also plenty of money to be scooped up by requiring use of the new (patented) HFC refrigerants. Follow the money.

Really too bad. Halon is amazingly effective at dousing a fire, even in very small amounts.

We once came upon a stalled car on the roadside, which was starting to catch fire from a broken fuel line. We foolishly stopped to help, but we had no idea how to do anything useful.

While we were throwing sand on the fire, along comes another traveler who stops to assist. An older gentleman, neatly dressed in a suit and tie, carrying a briefcase. WTF?

The man walks up, opens his case, pulls out what looked like a can of shaving cream and takes one squirt at the fire - which immediately goes out.

Turns out he was a sales rep for a fire suppression company and that little can of "shaving cream" was a halon dispenser. I wish I could buy one of those today.
