Berkeley may be 1st U.S. city to propose eliminating police from traffic stops, enforcement

In the East Bay, in what's believed to be a first in the nation proposal, the City of Berkeley has proposed ending police traffic enforcement.

Next week, Berkeley's City Council will vote on a proposal to create a Department of Transportation and use employees in that department to make traffic stops instead of Berkeley Police officers.

"A minor traffic violation should not have resulted in the murder of a black or brown body, but at the same time we can also re-examine the nature of punitive law enforcement and broken windows policing that makes traffic enforcement so deadly to begin with."

No traffic enforcement. No armed officers in schools. No jail for violent offenses. No prosecution of drug crimes. Homeless people have more rights than property owners. The police are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and legit cases against criminals are dismissed or not filed.

What could go wrong?

And a certain number traffic stops result in arrest for things like stolen vehicle, outstanding warrants, and the like. An unarmed meter maid is not going to far well in these situations.

I presume that not pulling over and running from this non-police action is perfectly fine, because these glorified meter maids are not going to be able to give chase? And if they do give chase, it is kind of like a dog chasing a car. What does the dog do if it catches the car?

Good!

The majority of police want to stop being revenue generators for the politicians.

Revenue stream will increase.

What will stop is the capture of violent criminals found during routine stops.

“Its doubtful that the people out there are capable of learning.”

I agree, but those people are already lost. It’s other parts of the country that will benefit from seeing Leftists doing what they really want to do.

As a retired LEO I think this is a great idea. Now we can spend more time at Dunkin Donuts drinking coffee.

Who ever thought the term “California rolling stop” would escalate to this?

They must be OK with whites being killed though since they only mention black, or brown.

Off topic but perhaps useful information. Years ago I got a click-it or ticket citation and the fine was going to be over $100. I paid a local law firm $25 to contest the ticket and the charges were ultimately dropped. I learned a lesson from that little episode: always contest bullsht charges.

No one will be happier than the cops about this. Ticket quotas - and every agency has them - makes cops revenuers for local government. Give the job to a group of meter maids on wheels, and use diversity as a hiring requirement. Nothing says welcome to East Bay like a ticky tack summons shoved up your arse by someone who grunts rather than speaks.

“Traffic law enforcement is a revenue stream for cities... I don’t see this happening”

Bingo! These people are idiots.

For the same reason, revenue, they will not forgive college loans. The Fed had to show where the funding for elaborate government retirement plans had to come from. They took over all education funding as those loans are guaranteed revenue over thirty years for each loan. This is why school loans can no longer be forgive through bankruptcy. It is also why the government can not forgive those loans. If they do, they must raise taxes to provide the level of retirement that no private company has now. That was the whole idea about taking over college financing. It’s the government’s fault that they took over financing “studies” programs instead of degrees that lead to jobs where the student could, at least, repay the money.

For the left this is a win-win.

It cost a lot of money to try people and then if found guilty to keep them in jail. If you don’t arrest anyone you save a lot of money.

Leftism is a destructive disease. Thank God we don’t have it.

I worked around a lot of Lefties. Their weird ideas, immunity to facts, and monumental hypocrisy never ceased to amaze me.

No police traffic stops means anything goes on the streets...speeding, drag racing, running stop signs, no license plates, no drivers licenses, stolen cars, driving on the wrong side of the road, blocking traffic, double parking, disabled cars in travel lanes....etc.

How will they be able to give up the money they get from those traffic stops?

Yeah, that’ll work real good. After a couple of times of some fat little old meter maid getting blown away after stopping a red light runner who happens to be driving a stolen car or has warrants, it won’t seem like such a good idea.
