The federal holiday swap would avoid putting US further in debt, say amendment sponsors
Republican Sens. Ron Johnson and James Lankford on Wednesday introduced an amendment proposing to replace Columbus Day with (GOP senators propose...) Juneteenth as a new federal holiday to avoid putting the U.S. further in debt.
[snip] In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt, Johnson said Wednesday. We support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans schedules.
According to Johnsons office, the economic cost of a single federal holiday has been estimated to be about $600 million for paid time off for federal employees.

Trolls and traitors.
I think its worthy of a holiday. I would not bow to removing Columbus day though.
Isn’t the entire month of February a holiday for/about black people?
Combine Juneteenth with the Fourth of July or with MLK day no more additional federal holidays and no two black holidays
ENOUGH
I think its worthy of a holiday. I would not bow to removing Columbus day though.
Disagree. Mark Steyn sees Juneteenth as being positioned by the radical left as the anti-4th of July and I agree. No need to give an inch to those folks.
They make Juneteenth a Federal Holiday, Then it will be Stonewall Day, then Harriet Tubman’s birthday, then Frederick Douglass Birthday, then .............................
The only creature that can be found alive after their spine is removed is a republican senator.
What a stupid argument. “Columbus day” is not an historic one, it is somebody’s birthday, who did some historic things.
Juneteeth is actually an historic day, it is the day that something actually happened. You may not care about what happened on that day, but it is “historic”.
While we cannot point to a single day when “all the slaves gained independence”, since that happened in bits and pieces, the idea of celebrating the fact that slaves received independence is as valid as celebrating the fact that we achieved independence (which we did NOT do on July 4th, but it again was as good a day to celebrate as any, although if I were choosing I might choose the day the british surrendered).
Defend Columbus day if you think that his accidentally landing here and naming people because he thought he was actually in India is worth celebrating, even though a lot of people already were pretty sure there was land here, and frankly others had already been here.
But don’t pretend October 12 is “historic”, and june 19th is not.
You know, Texas has been celebrating June 19th as a holiday since 1980.
Most companies by and large are doing away with holidays! There once were many religious holidays and now most of them are gone to hide the fact that we as a country were (and should still be be) based on Christian believes. That said, of the every few holidays the average Joe gets or even hears about any longer one is MLKjr birthday! So now WOKE whatevers want another foe juneteen? HAVE HAD ENOUGH AND YOU? But what the hell do I know! Appears these same cowards are also hell bent on changing a bunch of military base names too - *sshat!
Nobody, including you and MOST BLACK PEOPLE, had even heard of it until recently.
It’s not worthy of a holiday at all and yes it will replace Columbus Day
Only if the right is dumb enough to let them. The end of slavery was something done by Republicans - if the Republicans of today are too dumb to capitalize on their own accomplishments and good acts, they need to smarten up fast.
Apparently, you haven’t noticed that there is no organized “right” now. There is no opposition party to the progressive-corporist alliance.
“The only creature that can be found alive after their spine is removed is a republican senator.”
Brilliant and unfortunately only too true.
Isnt the entire month of February a holiday for/about black people?

It’s a month of celebration of black history and all facets of media and entertainment while usually they focus on black people they are HYPER focused month of February with movie and specials tributes etc.
In school we’d used to do papers on one black historical figure that month, one we would choose.
So while not a holiday per se, it was a month long spotlight..or super spotlight considering how much blacks and black culture are constantly celebrated in the media and other places. Especially for being 13% of the population.
It’s almost worship at this point.
It is worship.
The thing nobody seems to realize is that if anyone should be celebrated for Juneteenth it is the white soldiers in Blue that brought Jubilo to the slaves.
