Kristi Noem is a four-term Congresswoman and the current Governor of South Dakota. In todays authoritarian environment, with governors issuing diktats purporting to organize every facet of our lives, she has stood tall as a voice for freedom.
Early in the COVID epidemic, Governor Noem gave a press conference in which she said that South Dakotans are free Americans, not subject to arbitrary orders from politicians. They are also smart: South Dakotans can look after their own health better than any government can. So her administration has put out a steady stream of data and advice, but she has refused to order anyone to do anything.
And guess what: South Dakota has a very low level of COVID fatality and, last time I checked, the lowest unemployment rate in the country.

When looting and arson erupted across the U.S. following the death of George Floyd, a riot began in Sioux Falls. Within minutes, Noem called out the National Guard to suppress criminal behavior. Rioting and looting will not be tolerated in South Dakota, she said.

On July 8, Center of the American Experiment will host Governor Noem in a webinar where she will explain her freedom-first approach to the COVID epidemic, and review the results she has obtained by respecting the intelligence of her constituents.

I hope the President makes a huge deal about this fine Republican Governor and holds her out as a shining example of what a Republican SHOULD be.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is in order here.
Uhh, RULES! Kristi is HAWT!
Id like to see her run for President in 2024.
“Id like to see her run for President in 2024.”
Agreed. She certainly has bigger cojones than any other Republicans eligible to run then.
Best governor for the handling of the coronavirus. By some distance.
Very accomplished. Just keep her out of the Senate - they will ruin her.
Have they picked a keynote speaker for the convention yet? That’s a good springboard for a Presidential run.
I am all for her positions, that we are adults and we live with our decisions. But it has to be easier to control and manage something like this in SD vs other closely populated areas. A place like NY with wide use of public transportation and a very congested population.
Looking at some of the stats SD is 16th sorted by cases per 1M of population, though far lower in deaths per 1M..odd, maybe a younger population there (14th youngest avg pop). It is 46th in population density. Lets not give her the gold medal on pandemic control, until we see where this falls out over the next few months.
I would vote for her as President. Though not a chance to be elected in these times of most people actually hating freedom and personal responsibility.

If there is a political future for this country, she is in it.
The challenge maybe differ for a big city, but none of the cities answered it in any reasonable way. For example, public transit: you have to take it to get around, but it doesnt have to be a filthy, congested mess.
It took NYC several months to announce that they were going to start cleaning the subway cars every night and that they were going to get the homeless and their fifth out of them. And Im not sure they actually followed through on doing it.
They could also have disinfected with UV every night, installed air scrubbers (as used by airplanes for recirculated air).
Public housing, which is where most of the non-nursing home deaths occurred, is also filthy, decrepit and overcrowded. But instead of working to improve that, they locked people into these towers so they could spread the virus even more effectively among them.
They didnt even do public health campaigns against urinating or defecating in public, spitting, etc., all of which are reasonable disease control measures. Nor did they encourage people to build their immune systems through simple means such as taking vitamin D, known to help, or improving their diets.
And they didnt improve or expand or invest in the miserable public hospitals, the decayed and unsanitary public school buildings, and a host of other things they could have done.
Instead they imprisoned the people, crushed the economy, and destroyed what little existed of the educational system.
Governments should let people make their own health decisions...and take responsibility for providing a healthy environment.
And NOT as VICE to a wimp like McCain!!
Me too!!
