The San Francisco Unified School District is moving toward renaming some schools in the city amid a moment of national reckoning on race and history.
From the toppling of statues honoring controversial figures who were tied to slavery in Golden Gate Park this weekend to a push to rename Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in Marin County, the Bay Area is changing its views on honoring controversial figures of the past.
*** The Black Lives Matter movement that has erupted in recent weeks following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis has amplified a push to rename schools in the Bay Area and across the country.
Last week the Berkeley Unified School District decided to move forward in renaming Jefferson and Washington elementary schools that commemorate the first and third U.S. presidents, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who both owned slaves. Now the San Francisco Unified School District is looking to follow suit.
*** Schools that are under the spotlight include Francis Scott Key Elementary in the Sunset District, named after the man who wrote the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner, also a known slave owner.
Another school that may see a name change is Junipero Serra Elementary in Bernal Heights. Serra was an 18th century Franciscan friar who served as the architect of the California mission system during the era of Spanish colonization. The missions were designed to convert the indigenous population to Catholicism by confining them to missions throughout California. Natives who tried to escape were beaten and captured, as indigenous customs were banned.
Other schools under the spotlight in San Francisco include Washington High School and John Muir Elementary, which may be renamed for the poet and San Francisco native Maya Angelou.

San Fran ought to rename all schools after George Floyd, to prove they really do care more.
My mother went to Washington HS in San Francisco. One of her fellow students was Johnny Mathis. Since he is part black, the experience there must have traumatized him terribly.
May I suggest: Tupac Skakur Elementary School, Notorious B.I.G. Elementary School, Louis Farrakhan High School, Mumia Abu Jamal School of Advanced Studies.
When they are loading us on the trains maybe we could push back then.
I kind of like it.

Chances are awfully good.
Ditto Danny Glover.
And don’t forget the beautiful Washington High alumna Lee Meriwether who I don’t think is black but did once sport a black Catwoman suit on Batman.
Even here in San Diego, which is more conservative than San Fransicko, the Left wants to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus and rename Discovery Park. Without the statue “Discovery” could refer to just about anything. It could be a child discovering nature for the first time.
Can we just go by what these historical figures are most known for? If we only erected statues of morally perfect people whose views conform to our 21st century sensibilities sculptors would go out of business. When most people are asked to name one important fact about George Washington, most non-SJWs do not say, “He owned slaves” although he did.
Riot in the streets and you can get public buildings named after you. But it really doesnt matter much what the sign on the outside may say. What counts is whats being taught inside. And regrettably thats not changing. At least not in the People’s Republic of San Fransicko
Tyrone Shoelaces Middle School.

“Im sure the programmers of the GPS know the bad neighborhoods, but arent allowed to warn you.”
Garmin (? one of the originals) did, indeed, have a setting to avoid high crime neighborhoods, but removed it as this was deemed raycist.
Lee Meriwether is my aunt’s buddy from high school. She was a couple years ahead of my mom.
Quite right. Here in Pittsburgh we have The Barack Obama Academy of International Studies. The grade 6 - 12 school is an International Baccalaureate school and was named for Pres Obama in 2009. Despite the name, enrollment at this public school has slipped, and the percentage of students achieving proficiency in math is 31% (which is lower than the Pennsylvania state average of 46%) for the 2016-17 school year. The percentage of students achieving proficiency in reading/language arts is 48% (which is lower than the Pennsylvania state average of 63%) for the 2016-17 school year. Overall, Pittsburgh Obama 6-12 placed in the bottom 50% of all schools in Pennsylvania for overall test scores (math proficiency is bottom 50%, and reading proficiency is bottom 50%) for the 2016-17 school year. But the name is an excellent name, very uplifting, as you point out.
Interesting! Small world. Lee was gorgeous in her day... and wore that catsuit well.
Oh wait, Truth be told, his mother was Dutch.
Locally, they renamed the ‘Alternative High School’ ‘The Academy’. They did this because of the bad reputation the Alternative High School and its students had. They think the problem is the name. No they don’t. They know what the problem is and cannot say it, let alone do something about it. So they change the name.
...a hero...
