A 29-mile convoy through southern Oregon, followed by a rally, followed by a direct appeal to the White House, and a decision by the Department of the Interior. That’s what it took to open up irrigation water for farmers in southern Oregon last week. It all started with one of the biggest protests you probably didn’t even notice.
In a June 9 press release, the Bureau of Reclamation announced that it had restored the 140,000-acre-feet of water originally promised to farmers in the Klamath Basin at the beginning of the season:
Today, the Bureau of Reclamation confirmed the 2020 water supply for the Klamath Project. The Klamath Project delivers irrigation water to approximately 230,000 acres in southern Oregon and northern California.

The Klamath Project water supply supports farms and the hard-working communities that depend upon agriculture as a way of life, in addition to migratory bird refuges, endangered fisheries and Tribal needs.

This follows a large rally held by farmers, ranchers, and residents all across southern Oregon to protest the broken promise of water for irrigation. One of the rally organizers, Bob Gasser,.. expected maybe 500 trucks and tractors to arrive for the rally, but they ended up with over 2,200 vehicles in the convoy. Gasser says they chose a convoy over a rally due to concerns over COVID-19. The convoy took place over Memorial Day weekend and attracted more than 4,000 people.

This dispute has been going on for 20 years over a sucker fish that live in the mud of ponds and planted salmon rivers. Ostensibly.
What it really is is a land grab by various environmental groups like American Rivers AR and The Nature Conservancy TNC - both of which are at the heart of this tragedy in the War on Natural Resource Harvesters.
When I was there in 2001 there were federal marshals guarding the irrigation valves (the valves are huge). TNC had just managed to force out several farmers (who farmed ecologically) using both legal and financial moves - having the bank stop loans or making bank call notes).
TNC then bought the land for below market rate, sold some back to the Fed Gov as a preserve for the amount the paid for the entire sets of properties, then turned around and sold some of the farms to their members who continued to farm exactly as the original farmers had done for over a century. TNC then pocketed the difference. AR used similar tactics

THe BLM folks were protesting in Kfalls two weeks ago......more gun owners protecting downtown businesses than on Korea’s DMZ

Unfortunately, they only represent about 10% of the Oregon population. And Oregon has become one of the states that is probably blue for perpetuity.

I remember the Klamath water issue in the late 90s (think it was then). Jeff Head was involved if I remember correctly.
