A Warning From Sweden’s Coronavirus Response
Forbes ^ | June 4, 2020 | William A. Haseltine

Posted on 06/05/2020 5:51:02 PM PDT by DoodleBob

Sweden now has among the highest per capita death rates from Covid-19 in the world. Why?

The answer is simple. Sweden was lax in its implementation of protective measures in the face of the outbreak, refusing to implement broad stay at home orders for residents, or to enforce recommendations to wear masks or social distancing measures. Other than the government decision to shut down universities and high schools, compliance to public health recommendations was entirely voluntary.

Early on, my Swedish friends seemed proud of their exceptionalism. They sent many of their children to school without many of the protections that are both in place and under consideration in many other countries. Outside the country, many voiced their praise of Sweden’s “common sense” approach, which they wagered would be less economically destructive than stricter measures and would not lead to any greater number of deaths.

They were wrong. Even the chief architect of the Swedish anti-coronavirus plan is able to admit it. In an interview translated by Reuters, Sweden’s chief epidemiologist told Swedish radio that the country clearly could have done better in fighting the virus and that there was “quite obviously a potential for improvement in what we have done.” In particular, he said Sweden should have started testing earlier and more extensively and they should have done more to protect older adults in Sweden’s long term care centers, where more than half of all Sweden’s coronavirus-deaths have occurred.

Either The lockdowns were completely unnecessary or the BLM protests are going to result in 70K - 100K additional deaths over the next 3 months. We’ll know in a few weeks.

Sweden doesn’t have a lot of double chins, so their “CCV deaths” are likely 75 years old and above.

Anyone have the the Mediun age of death from CCV in Sweden?

If its 79, F’ing Yawn.

It was a scam.

0.026% mortality rate and falling.

80% of people who get it have no symptoms.

You’re just a perverted control freak who gets his jollies out of terrorizing people and destroying their livelihoods.

Actually, the point is that Sweden's economy - which should in theory be better off - is in reality just as bad as that of other/"shut down" countries.

Now, a good bit of that is because Sweden depends on tourism, which dried up. Also, Sweden recommended that her people not travel domestically, which had a knock-on economic impact. So her deteriorating economy isn't a purely internal matter.

This doesn't mean Sweden's risk-based approach to keeping things open was unwise. I think it was pretty smart. But the Swedes have mentally surrendered their freedom for the "wisdom of experts." If the experts said "shut it down" then they'd have dutifully walked off that cliff.

Thanks for posting the normalized and time-standardized numbers. Obviously we have some issues in the NE and some other cities in some states. But the numbers tell me we are in pretty good shape otherwise.

The remaining unanswered question is how much immunity there is. NYC has 25% antibodies, but we don't know if that translates to immunity. Sweden's antibody numbers were apparently disappointing.

In NYC they have 25% antibodies from random testing. They lost 0.25% of their population. That's 1% mortality. That's probably worst case since many of those deaths were at substandard hospitals.

Don’t know for this strain. Average coronavirus immunity is estimated 2-3 years.

Me either. The amount of suicide and other deaths will far exceed COVID deaths, but you’ll never hear squat about it.

See you a year from now with all the same data up to that point. Then the comparisons will be more meaningful as to whether or not Sweden took a better LONG TERM approach.

Yea, I realized I went from a daily posting to weekly to whenever. My job as a shrubber got in the way.

Until I see null and DoughtyOne on the USS Missouri signing a peace treaty with COVID19 then I won't consider this war over. However, for now I'm hereby withholding further mass posting of my data (but the spreadsheet inside the DoodleBob compound will remain live).

Daniel, with all due respect, that data show Sweden having the 7th highest per capita fatality value out of 180+ countries with fatalities. They’re in the 4th percentile.
