LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is prepared to offer extended visa rights and a pathway to citizenship for almost 3 million Hong Kong residents in response to Chinas push to impose national security legislation in the former British colony.
Chinas parliament has approved a decision to go forward with national security legislation for Hong Kong that democracy activists, diplomats and some in the business world fear will jeopardise its semi-autonomous status and its role as a global financial hub.
Britain, the United States, Australia, Canada and the EU have all sharply criticised the move.
Foreign minister Dominic Raab said on Thursday that if Beijing went ahead, Britain would extend the rights of 350,000 British National Overseas passport holders.
On Friday the interior ministry said that this policy would apply to all BNOs currently in Hong Kong - a much larger group of around 2.9 million people according to British government figures.

We can give Hollywood to Hong Kong, they used to make some good movies back in the 80s
We'll take anybody in HK who believes in liberty. We'll send to China these leftard protesters.
I know they are off to a good start there.
Now that Princess Meghan has departed, there should be plenty of room.
It will be a huge culture shock for the Honk Kong people that take the UK up on this offer. They will be shocked at the Socialism that dominates the UK. Shocked at the piss poor Gov’t run healthcare system. Shocked at the large muslim presence in Londonistan with its No Go Zones.
Shocked at the old and decrepit state of housing most in the UK live in.
I’ve been to both places. I would much prefer Hong Kong. The HK prior to the recent CCP take over that is.
Freedom loving anti-communists. Hard working and dedicated to educating their children. We could use more of them. Better than Latin Americans wanting free stuff and absolutely better than Mid-Eastern types who want Islam to rule.
Starting with Bill Clinton.
In 1997 over 100,000 came to Vancouver? (Richmond)
It would be a real boost for Britain I think.
It would be a real boost for Britain I think.
We should do the same, Hong Kong is very right ring on economic issues.
It would be a smart move and those are rare things these days.

The Tories are open border too. Britain, it was nice knowing you.
Sorry for America-First types, but that is a BRILLIANT move.
Needless to say, don’t expect it here.
This may be just what England needs right now. The right sort of immigrant. Legal, hard working and family oriented.
I have been reading about some Brits who heard that England is considering the acceptance of 30K or more immigrants.
Some callers were upset, does that mean Brexit was a waste?
If the immigrants are from Hong Kong, then, no, this won’t cancel out any gains from Brexit. My guess is that these folks will be good for their economy and not be a perpetual drain. We could use them over here too.
It should have been offered before Britain left. I don’t understand how Britain could trust the Chi-Coms to follow the agreement they made. I have a large amount of British blood in my veins, but I am sick of how Britain occupied all these nations, and then in some cases, cut and run because they didn’t want to deal with the problems. They created these problems, and then ran away.
Too late for that. Americans imported 10’s of millions of slaves from Africa. Those cause more crime, more dependence on welfare, than immigrants from any other countries.
Majority of students in doctorate program in American universities in STEM curriculum’s were not born in USA.
Ditto with Silicon valley entrepreneurs. That is where the most high-tech innovations come from. Majority were not born in USA.
Only stupid Europhiles would take the fake news seriously.
Pro-Communist Chinese freepers tried to tear me a new one when I suggested the same thing.
