This is a NEJM EDITORIAL, not a science publication. NEJM’s editorials are no more reliable than any other media publication, and on some subjects, less so. There is nothing authoritative here.

"And having a cloth mask stop a virus is like trying to stop a bumble with a wooden fence. It is about “size” .."

Wrong. The particles emitted by human sneezing, coughng, or breathing are WATER DROPS, not free virus particles, and hence readily stopped by masks. You will NEVER have a free-floating bare virus particle in the air, because even after the water evaporates, the salt, protein and other human bioparticles will still cover the virus particle.

The mask is a sign of contemptible weakness and slavery.

The author wears a mask to protect his wife.

You have to be insecure or indifferent to place your own appearance above lowering someone else's risk.

Nobody ever shames my wife (6’1”) or me (6’7”) for not wearing masks in stores. Self righteous side-eye, but no confrontation. It’s discrimination I tell you, I want equal treatment.

Extra pissed now that I have sources to staple to their pointy little heads.

I served 22 years in the military, deployed to many conflicts to protect your right not to wear a mask.

So do not call me weak for choosing to wear a mask, it is my right to wear a mask I earn it.

Thanks for serving too.

Can we assume that you have studied up on the subject and filtered through the political aspects of the whole kitandcaboodle and made a rational decision regarding the topic? If you have, then great. Wear a mask.

If not, oh well. We have a choice, a duty even, to slice through the bullspit and get to the facts.

Even then, one does not easily or commonly change z viewpoint.

You can have my allotment of nonN95 masks. Hope you are well.

Yes I have study up on the mask and have the 3M N95 Masks. My household has a medical reason for wearing a mask (inoperable ACC in bottom of the trachea, only treatment is experimental, we just trying to outrun it).

The Doctor advises us to have a mask when we go out into the public. I know even a good medical grade mask is not fool proof. We are just making the odds better for us, I do not want to bring something home.

Well, this turned into a mask argument thread as I’d figured, but why wasn’t more of the Breitbart article given? FR does not have this tiny excerpt limit for them. My 12 year old laptop (bought used) and old XP platform (that 6 years after MS pulled it I refuse to give up) won’t let me see Breitbart (without lotsa pain and a freeze). FR usually does. Oh well.

...takes a longer exposure than that...and even if that were true, it would require coughing, sneezing or shouting to propel droplets far enough to infect anyone, so if that’s not going on, masks do nothing...
_____________________________________________________________

It is the small, frequent, fleeting *exposures* that build immunity. Not enough to make someone ill, but enough to train the immune system to recognize the virus and react against it.

But it doesn’t matter. The inculcated will only accept what justifies their prior and current behavior, while the knowledgeable will give up in order to be allowed to shop.

Brings to mind selling a birthright for a mess of pottage.

They protect others from inhaling droplets potentially with viruses of the wearers
******************************************************
So all the health experts who claimed the virus droplets are too small to be stopped by any mask, other than an N95 professionally fitted are all wrong? Thanks for clearing that up for everyone.

Ok, let’s compromise.

Only the asymptomatic COVID spreaders should wear a mask. Right? The ones with symptoms aren’t well enough to go out anyway. So they probably won’t be in the grocery store with you.

Healthy people don’t need to wear a mask, right? Only asymptomatic people. After all, these 40 to 80% of COVID infected folks are the only people out and about who could possibly give you the virus in the course of one short conversation.

Oh wait. Asymptomatic COVID people think they are healthy and don’t need to wear a mask either!

Are you an asymptomatic COVID person? How do you know?

Just wear a mask please!

Face mask were never intended to protect the wearer.
Is that why doctors wear them? Then remove them to talk to you after surgery?

“Are you an asymptomatic COVID person? How do you know? / Just wear a mask please!”

Asymptomatic people breathe out very tiny droplets, too small to be affected by most masks. And if you are not in a contained space for 30 minutes with them, you won’t get any significant exposure anyways.

The masks prevent the larger globs from passing through - the sort produced by SYMPTOMATIC people. And those larger globs fall to teh ground within 6 feet.

So...keep some spacing, avoid people coughing and sneezing, be happy to live someplace where “subway” refers to a sandwich and you’ll probably be fine. I’m over 60, but healthy as so my odds of dying from the Wuhan Flu are pretty small anyways.

Meanwhile, the folks I know who are high risk for age also would have problems breathing for long periods in a mask. Or even 5 minutes. So they are mostly getting others to do their shopping for them.

But no. Masks are not protecting others from you, certainly not unless you are coughing and sneezing. And if you are - STAY HOME!

Quarantine the sick. What a concept!

I’m glad to hear from an expert in all things COVID! Especially since I read so much contradictory stuff about this virus.

Your post is so reassuring to someone like me who is in the high risk group. Not!

It’s not rocket science. The best way to keep everyone safer is if everyone wears a mask. Sorry if that conflicts with your totally selfish aversion to face coverings.

Here's some more HOSPITAL DOCTORS and their educated advice: Then there's this study, Cloth masks—dangerous to your health?:
And there's PhD Judy Mikovits and former E.R. Phd Rashid Buttar and their interview with Robyn Openshaw : [Second Interview] NOW ... do you get the picture and what those so-called 'experts' are trying to do to us ?

I rarely jump through all the hoops needed to post an article here,

JR should work on a simplification of the posting process. I’ve been on FR for several years and have posted more than 9,000 replies, but only one article because of the hassle of doing so.
