The coronavirus hit Chile at a particularly delicate time. Back in October, the Chilean military deployed tanks and troops onto the streets of Santiago – the Chilean capital – and President Sebastian Piñera declaring a state of emergency to quell a violent uprising triggered by – of all things – a hike in metro fares (can you imagine that happening in NYC?).
Now, some of the nation’s poorest are rising up against the government again in a violent protest movement over the lack of government assistance. Specifically, food shortages have left thousands of Chileans with nothing to eat, and the mandatory closures have made it impossible for them to work or buy food.
In a televised address last night, President Piñera pledged to get food to those in need, according to the Santiago Times, the capital’s largest English language newspaper.
Chile has more than 46,000 cases of the virus, along with 478 deaths, but a recent spike in cases and deaths prompted Piñera go impose a lockdown in and around the capital. The strict measures, which were heavily enforced, went into effect this weekend.

I thought I was fluent in Spanish but when her husband called to tell me what was going on he taught me some words I had never heard before.
If she has cancer, then her surgery isn’t ‘elective’. She needs to be demanding with Docs there. Unless she is, they’ll push her aside. My uncle was a Cardiologist in Mexico for 4 decades - she needs to keep pushing her Doc until he relents.
Chilean Spanish is a bit different than other nations, they have a unique dialect and use different verbs/adverbs.
I have to really concentrate to comprehend 100% sometimes.

Yes, Chilean Spanish is different. I learned mine in Costa Rica, refined it in Venezuela and then went there and found out I had to do a bunch of relearning.

I would have been fluent in Spanish, after working 2 1/2 years in Peru...but I was then transferred to Chile and lived there for 5-years and worked two years in Argentina...another country not known for its precise Espanol.
Geez, between the two of them, I’m lucky I can order a taco in a US Mexican restaurant.
Guagua is one of those words I had to learn what it meant more then once. It means, “Baby”, “Bus”, “Small gift” or “Jug” depending on where you are in what county.
Give me her first name, I’ll pray for her to make the right decision & that the docs do the right thing.
She needs to do this now.
Languages are crazy. It’s like putting a dude from the Bronx in Sydney - probably not going to end well, even with Spanish.
