Donald Trump was adamant in stating that, if a second wave of the coronavirus hits the United States, he wont shut the economy down again.
CNBC reported on the presidents visit to a Ford plant in Michigan.
People say thats a very distinct possibility, its standard, Trump said when asked about a second wave during a tour of a Ford factory in Michigan.
We are going to put out the fires. Were not going to close the country, Trump said. We can put out the fires. Whether it is an ember or a flame, we are going to put it out. But we are not closing our country.
This bug is a persistent little pest. It spreads very easily from person to person, indicating several different ways someone can become infected. And with so many people walking around who have it but dont know it and dont feel it, its not just going to disappear any time soon.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the White House coronavirus task force, told The Washington Post this week that he has no doubt there will be new waves of cases.
The virus is not going to disappear, he told Post. Its a highly transmissible virus. At any given time, its some place or another. As long as thats the case, theres a risk of resurgence.
If it were up to him and the vast majority of public health professionals, the people would be locked in their homes and almost all businesses would be shuttered. It worked in China. It wont work here.
Trump may want the country to remain open when the second wave of infections arrives, but ultimately, the decisions are the governors to make.

Not a feasible option. Protect the most vulnerable as best you can and, at some point, you have to let this thing run through the rest of the population.
The blood testing data shows that it is indeed highly transmissible. We are just damned lucky that it isn't nearly as lethal as it is transmissible. Even at that lower level of lethality we will still easily reach 100,000 American dead by the end of May, and though the numbers are trending down slowly, it ain't done yet.
Exposure to a disease doesn’t automatically equal you getting super sick. Even with the flu or a cold, some people aren’t as affected as others.
He took a chance. After HE closed the Country down, he turned the reopening over to the governors. No surprise, many of them, like Tom Wolf in PA and whutzerface in Michigan, turned out to be small-minded tin pot dictators at heart, who became drunk on their “power” and want to NEVER reopen. Would to God they were all like FL and GA but alas, not. So next time, I hope he’ll keep control himself.
Actually the tinpot putz dictators in battleground states like PA and MI are all but assuring Trump wins them in November.
Though a smart move politically, it sucks for those of us who actually live in these places.
People will literally take to arms if the Governors try to lock us down this fall. I would not want to be an enforcer in that case.
I would bet my small nothing that was their plan. They would cause a second wave and destroy the nation. THAT was their plan. I’d bet on it IF I were a betting man.
The response to this has been disasterous on all levels, including Federal. Thing is, Dems are disasterous on everything else (and I don’t think they would’ve done much better on this pandemic either).
THE most effective things...WEAR A MASK, and WASH YOUR HANDS.
By "flu season", we will have an adequate supply of commercial masks and plenty of hand sanitizer. The Italian subsidiary of the firm my wife works for got through their crisis with NO DEATHS just by stringent application of those two things.
The whole "masks don't work" meme is bullshit and probably originated in a Chinese disinformation tactic.
If there’s a hotspot or two like what we saw in New York City and New Orleans, lock it down but no more than 14 days. This does not apply to 99% of the country where people are socially distancing at their homes anyway so it won’t be like what we saw in those cities I mentioned and in Italy.
There will be a massive second wave manufactured and manipulated if the president wins reelection, accompanied by new impeachment efforts if the Dems keep the House.
I have mixed feelings here in Los Angeles. Of course I want President Trump for four more years, but at the same time fear another lengthy lockdown and more economic and social destruction.
Yes, I had to be tested for surgery.
Soon, I hope. Hard to open the country with that emergency proclamation hanging over everyone's head.
I wear a mask when I go inside stores. Not a big deal.
You beat me , I was about to post the same sentiment, almost word for word.
Likewise. I simply do NOT understand the rabid antipathy some people display. It is completely irrational to the verge of childishness.
I predict the President will be making a lot of statements like this over the next several weeks.
He will begin calling it the Democrat shutdown and be a strong advocate for ending it. He will tout Republican run states as being better off for having opened up sooner, and Democrat run states worse off for having stayed shuttered.
The Democrats will try to pivot, and pin this economic shutdown on the Trump administration - which would be a political disaster for him and other Republicans.
Fortunately, President Trumps political instincts are impeccable, so I expect he is about to make his move and beat them to the punch.
From your keyboard to God's infinite resolution monitor.
Needs to create a task force to:
* stockpile as much PPE as is physically possible
* develop a clear/simple to read (preferably using single syllable words only) set of instructions of how to handle the elderly and pass this list along to all Democrat governors
* disseminate copies of the Constitution to all governors, judges and law enforcement officers
* Identify potential hotspots (these will likely be found in Blue states) and develop quarantine plans for these states - no in or out (If you want out, you’d better leave now—but you may only do so by signing a waver indicating that you will agree to vote Republican or not vote at all unless you live in Utah, in which case you MUST vote against whoever is running against Mitt Romney)
