'Coronavirus parties' in this Washington state county might be reason for rise in cases, officials say

Residents of a southern Washington state county who attended so-called “coronavirus parties" could be behind an increase of cases in the community, local health officials said this week when urging residents to continue to adhere to social distancing measures.

The Walla Walla County of Community Health in a statement Tuesday said it had received reports of “COVID-19 parties” occurring within the community.

“Walla Walla County health officials are receiving reports of COVID-19 parties occurring in our community, where non-infected people mingle with an infected person in an effort to catch the virus,” officials said in a news release. “As COVID-19 cases in Walla Walla County continue to rise, health officials strongly recommend you remain vigilant with physical distancing to limit community transmission of the virus.”

Those taking part in such gatherings are deliberately exposing themselves to the virus in the hope of contracting it and developing immunity, similar to the idea behind so-called “measles parties,” which health officials have warned in the past are not a good idea. "Chickenpox" parties were also common before the vaccine was licensed for use in the U.S. in 1995. Some parents would intentionally expose their unvaccinated children to a child with chickenpox in an effort to make them immune, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

But with no effective treatment or vaccine to combat the novel coronavirus at this time, these gatherings are particularly risky.

Speaking to the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, Meghan DeBolt, director of the county’s Department of Community Health, called the gatherings “unacceptable” and “irresponsible.” She noted at least 25 infected people in the community have admitted to going to a "COVID-19 party."

“We don’t know when it is happening. It’s after the fact that we hear from cases,” she said.

You can still catch it in the sunlight. It doesn’t take 90 seconds for a sneeze to reach you if you are close.

Interestingly, the HHS info didnt show results from aerosol in summer with high humidity. 75 degress low humidity was 90 seconds half life

and pay attention....75 degrees high humidity is 2 minutes for half life on surfaces in direct sunlight. So yes you can still catch it..especially on playgrounds

BUT
sun better than no sun

This is a highly contagious disease. People at these parties would have caught it from an infected person.

RE:”If the ChiCom virus were no more serious than the various influenza viruses we’ve had over the past several decades, we should be sticking it to the state governors and mayors who ripped the Constitutional rights away from U.S. citizens.”

Some take-ways

The governors preempted the economic damage the virus would have caused by shutting down their own economies first, now they want the federal government to make their states whole again

Recent judicial decisions tell us their is no constitution anymore, which makes me wonder why the justices were not furloughed without pay(like most other people), since they are proving they are no longer needed.

“66% of NYC fatalities died at home.”

That’s not true. According to the survey, 66% of hospital fatalities, allegedly contracted the virus while sheltering at home. I say allegedly, because I know many people - myself included — who will say they are sheltering at home, except for going to the grocery store, pharmacy, mini-mart, recreation, take-out restaurants, etc.

I always wear a mask inside stores, but not outside away from people (riding a bike, etc.)

Lately, I have not participated in any outside group activities, but I'd wear my mask if a bunch of folks were around, and I couldn't keep social distance. And I'd be careful what I touched, and wash/disinfect my hands frequently.

At the beach, in a sea breeze, with people 20 feet away, no mask for sure.

Just my input.

There is no question. Herd immunity eventually and inevitably will occur. But as it happens, the herd will be painfully culled. There will be much sickness, death, sadness and mourning. This is not a herd of cows.

I not sure we can make a vaccine for this virus.

I’m not comparing it to the common cold in its effects, but like the common cold, which has no vaccine, we could be in the same place regarding a vaccine.

Even the flu vaccine, which I get every year, needs to be changed to the latest mutation and sometimes the scientists get it wrong and this year’s anticipated flu does not appear so their formula is ineffective. The vaccine is still effective for the flu they made it for, just not the one that winds up making the rounds.

That is why I think it is a mistake to keep places closed and let the economy continue to spiral downward while we wait for a vaccine that might never come.

It’s not ideal for sure. Many may die, but we cannot stop the world without further damage and many deaths from another issue, namely starvation, homelessness, despair and social unrest, that occur in horrible economic times.

Not airborne Travis. You love the fearmongering. If airborne simple surgical masks would not prevent or protect. Please leave the medical terms to the professionals

Right the mischief occurs in the headline and the attempt to correlate these parties with a supposed increase in cases. I have no doubt any increase is due to more testing.

You are correct and probably incorrect.

There is no “common cold”. Rather there are I believe numerous rino viruses that produce the symptoms. Thus although perhaps several vaccines against specific rino viruses could be cooked up, there would still be others .

The Covid 19 virus is specific.

There are already vaccines against Covid 19 created in very recent time. The vaccines must be tested before being released. That process is tie consuming.

There was a thread describing work by a San Diego lab that made a vaccine in three days after receiving the Covid 19 genome. There are reports her of 14 different vaccines apparently now existing.

So based on what I have read here, the problem is testing and approval and then manufacturing

Actually, as it says in the article: She noted at least 25 infected people in the community have admitted to going to a "COVID-19 party."

This is a highly contagious disease

But if it's so highly contagious, then wouldn't most people have already caught it in the months before the March shutdown?

Not seeing the logic here ... it's so highly contagious that everyone has to wear masks and hide in their houses, yet it's not contagious enough that nobody got it before now??

Not airborne????????????????????

What recent study tells you that..because there are plenty of studies that say the opposite.

Btw, negative pressure rooms are recommended for COVID 19 patients

Medcram Dr is running out of them and puts two COVID patients to a negative pressure room.

WHO also said it could not be transmitted human to human.

WHO says anything their ChiCom masters tell them to say on that day.

Ultimately you are correct. The real downside of continual shutdown includes illness and deaths for a multitude of reasons. That herd immunity will have to develop and it will be painful to watch.
Still much is still not known about COVID-19 susceptibility. For instance did the fact that some folks received yearly “flu vaccines” for the past fifteen years do them some good. Might with all the antigen variations in these vaccines might there be some cross immunity to COVID-19? Unknown but being evaluated. What is the role of ACE inhibitors and ARBs. They may be protective or they may make individuals more vulnerable. Unknown and being studied. Also what is the true genetic susceptibility of any given individual to this pathogen . Some get exposed and become infected, other exposed individuals go their merry ,healthy way. The answer lies in the human genome and eventually that gene and those who possess or lack it will be identified and identifiable. Finally the answer may lie in China , the source of this virus. No doubt Wusan , the epicenter was hard hit. But why and just how have other Chinese urban areas and large population centers been largely spared. That is a question scientists would love to know.
