'Coronavirus parties' in this Washington state county might be reason for rise in cases, officials say

Residents of a southern Washington state county who attended so-called “coronavirus parties" could be behind an increase of cases in the community, local health officials said this week when urging residents to continue to adhere to social distancing measures.

The Walla Walla County of Community Health in a statement Tuesday said it had received reports of “COVID-19 parties” occurring within the community.

“Walla Walla County health officials are receiving reports of COVID-19 parties occurring in our community, where non-infected people mingle with an infected person in an effort to catch the virus,” officials said in a news release. “As COVID-19 cases in Walla Walla County continue to rise, health officials strongly recommend you remain vigilant with physical distancing to limit community transmission of the virus.”

Those taking part in such gatherings are deliberately exposing themselves to the virus in the hope of contracting it and developing immunity, similar to the idea behind so-called “measles parties,” which health officials have warned in the past are not a good idea. "Chickenpox" parties were also common before the vaccine was licensed for use in the U.S. in 1995. Some parents would intentionally expose their unvaccinated children to a child with chickenpox in an effort to make them immune, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

But with no effective treatment or vaccine to combat the novel coronavirus at this time, these gatherings are particularly risky.

Speaking to the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, Meghan DeBolt, director of the county’s Department of Community Health, called the gatherings “unacceptable” and “irresponsible.” She noted at least 25 infected people in the community have admitted to going to a "COVID-19 party."

“We don’t know when it is happening. It’s after the fact that we hear from cases,” she said.

these gatherings are particularly risky.

Not if they are held outside and people keep their distance - scare tactics again.

Exactly. And in any event, due to the characteristics of this airborne infection, outside is safer than inside your local grocery store or post office.

66% of NYC fatalities died at home. Isolation did not save them. The “experts” were wrong from the beginning, but the enemies of Pres. Trump succeeded in destroying his strong economy, so they won this round. Never trust Democrats.

Viruses don’t do well on surfaces when there is actual direct sunlight involved, the Ultraviolet Rays from the Sun kill them.

Yes, and it’s indoor surfaces (all around the checkout counter at the grocery, the counters at the Post Office, etc.) where exhaled Coronavirus builds up and lingers, to be touched by lots of folks.

Not so outside at the beach or the park, in fresh air and sunlight.

Hopefully they’re all liberal coronavirus parties. I can’t see anyone in they’re right mind doing something as stoopid as that. Gotta be a Rat.

Under the right conditions, it wouldn’t be the worst idea. But generally speaking, yeah, it’s stupid.

I saw that yesterday.

The NYS ‘Stay in your Apartment or Nursing Home’ order didn't work out as promised.

Wait till Dems start demanding that Biden be replaced by ‘America's Governor’ Coumo

“66% of NYC fatalities died at home.”

Can you provide a link for that? I don’t think that’s accurate.

“Survey: 66% of all new coronavirus hospitalizations were those sheltered at home”

If you attend such a party, get the virus and die, you also get a Darwin award. However if ultimately, herd immunity is to develop, there will be much more COVID-19 illness among the majority of the population thus far not exposed, hopefully mild, but there will be serious illness and deaths especially among the elderly and medically vulnerable. Yet if you are under 50 and have the mindset of the folks attending COVID-19 parties the risk may not be to great for the individual and its the individual’s right to make that choice. The problem is that when they become infected and intermingle with family, roommates, intimates etc, they are exposing others, who perhaps did not wish to take the chance, to serious infection.

Underscores the need for an effective, safe vaccine. Otherwise the inevitable development of “herd immunity” will be a lengthy and not very pretty process.

If the ChiCom virus were more serious than the various influenza viruses we’ve had over the past several decades, we should be sticking it to the ChiComs.

If the ChiCom virus were no more serious than the various influenza viruses we’ve had over the past several decades, we should be sticking it to the state governors and mayors who ripped the Constitutional rights away from U.S. citizens.

I can see you didn't get past the headline

Headline includes the word "might" ... which also implies "might not"

Have any of the new corona cases actually been tied to people who attended the parties?

Obviously not, or else CNN and MSNBC would be screaming about it 24-7 ... so let's ease up on the Media-sustained hysteria

It may be that they think nothing is going on now with everything closed and delaying getting it may result in a more inconvenient timing for them.

Just guessing.

In Maryland they jailed someone for repeatedly throwing such parties.

Facebook and Twitter should be asked to delete these parties.
