If you attend such a party, get the virus and die, you also get a Darwin award. However if ultimately, herd immunity is to develop, there will be much more COVID-19 illness among the majority of the population thus far not exposed, hopefully mild, but there will be serious illness and deaths especially among the elderly and medically vulnerable. Yet if you are under 50 and have the mindset of the folks attending COVID-19 parties the risk may not be to great for the individual and its the individual’s right to make that choice. The problem is that when they become infected and intermingle with family, roommates, intimates etc, they are exposing others, who perhaps did not wish to take the chance, to serious infection.

Underscores the need for an effective, safe vaccine. Otherwise the inevitable development of “herd immunity” will be a lengthy and not very pretty process.

It may be that they think nothing is going on now with everything closed and delaying getting it may result in a more inconvenient timing for them.

Just guessing.

In Maryland they jailed someone for repeatedly throwing such parties.

I not sure we can make a vaccine for this virus.

I’m not comparing it to the common cold in its effects, but like the common cold, which has no vaccine, we could be in the same place regarding a vaccine.

Even the flu vaccine, which I get every year, needs to be changed to the latest mutation and sometimes the scientists get it wrong and this year’s anticipated flu does not appear so their formula is ineffective. The vaccine is still effective for the flu they made it for, just not the one that winds up making the rounds.

That is why I think it is a mistake to keep places closed and let the economy continue to spiral downward while we wait for a vaccine that might never come.

It’s not ideal for sure. Many may die, but we cannot stop the world without further damage and many deaths from another issue, namely starvation, homelessness, despair and social unrest, that occur in horrible economic times.

Herd immunity need not be a long process unless the curve is being flattened. Flattening the curve means extending the time to herd immunity.
