The union representing New York Citys police officers warned that the city will fall apart if the police force is used to enforce social distancing measures.
This situation is untenable: the [New York Police Department] needs to get cops out of the social distancing enforcement business altogether, Patrick Lynch, the president of the Police Benevolent Association of New York, said in a statement.
The NYPDs involvement in enforcing the citys social distancing orders has been thrust under scrutiny after video surfaced of an officer hitting a man in Manhattan while trying to separate people. Three men in total were arrested in the incident, and an officer is on modified duty pending an internal review.
Lynch accused the citys leadership of providing the police force only vague guidelines over how to enforce the measures, and that the criticism of the NYPDs involvement in making sure people separate from each other was inevitable.
The cowards who run this city have given us nothing but vague guidelines and mixed messages, leaving the cops on the street corners to fend for ourselves," he said. "Nobody has a right to interfere with a police action, but now that the inevitable backlash has arrived, they are once again throwing us under the bus.

Just another hopium and change ‘Rat Utopia coming to fruition.
This mommy society we are in has long punished small offenses and allowed the real criminals to run wild. Combine that with elitism and we have a toxic situation for cops.
I’m sure someone will call this statement racist.
This is like a Monty Python skit
OK. We’re talking NYC. What’s the difference between order and chaos? In NYC it appears to be the same thing.
I hope that’s a joke, but it’s hard to tell these days.
The Dems finally have created New Jack City.

"IDOLATOR!!! Your soul is required in Hell!"
Some common sense at last.
That’s it.
When you give people a very clear, defined short window of time, they can and will be accommodating. When it’s ill defined and just drags on, that’s when they start to bail on you. We’re hitting that tipping point.
Aren’t there some technical violations of law which are considered to be a low priority in terms of enforcement?
For example how many people get tickets for jaywalking? I’m sure it happens but what I’m getting at, is are police actively looking for jaywalkers?
It seems to me that technical violations of the social distancing decrees should be considered a low priority. If police are being told to keep an eye out for people violating these decrees that seems wrong to me. And it’s definitely improper if it absorbs the time and energy of policeman and keeps them from other more important work.
How are a handful of cops going to handle 8 million potential 'criminals'?
Good movie.
Makes no sense to folks that they are allowed to ignore distancing rules as they try to enforce distancing rules.
I saw the video of that takedown the other day. No policeman with any character would defend the actions of that officer. Had this happened in Alaska that officer would be looking for a new job. So that officer is not being thrown under the bus, he’s being held accountable for his unprofessional actions.
