Family-run Jersey Shore motel closing this summer to protect guests from coronavirus

Two months ago, North Wildwood motel owners Bill and Kathy Crane were preparing in full force for their 19th season in business. They paid for new carpeting for their motel, The Sandpiper, and were beginning heavy cleaning in the rooms.

But as the coronavirus spread throughout the region, the Cranes realized opening would be a problem. On Friday, the pair announced the motel would close for the summer of 2020, citing the health safety concerns of guests and staff.

“We get people from all over, New York and Canada,” said Bill Crane. “We couldn’t risk something happening over profit. You could have Bill Gates’ money, but it doesn’t matter if someone gets sick. I’d feel horrible if someone got sick here."

The pandemic could wreak havoc on the Jersey Shore’s economy, which relies heavily on a short, three-month window for business. While municipal officials discuss potential social distancing rules for June, July and August, an easing of boardwalk and beach restrictions ultimately rests on Gov. Phil Murphy.

Bill Crane said the Sandpiper had bookings through the end of September for the city’s annual Irish Fall Festival. Now, he and his wife are returning customers’ deposits and will be tapping into their savings to get through a summer without motel income.

For every small business owner I feel empathy for, there’s a clown like this one. He deserves to go out of business and never return. I do wonder though, if we are going to see some businesses floated by other interests and used as a vehicle to drive the narrative that the economy shouldn’t open thus slowing the recovery.

Stick a few kilowatt UV lamps in the sockets and rock-on

Just replace the free shampoo with some SPF-200

Roaches and bedbugs, yes. Coronavirus, hardly likely.

I feel for tourist places such as these beach towns, where they have just a few months out of the year to make their money. With summer fast approaching and no end in sight to lockdowns in liberal states, there will be a lot of business failures .

Leading German Virologist: ”No Transmission Of The Virus In Supermarkets, Restaurants Or Hairdressers Has Been Proved”
RTL Luxembourg ^ | 09.04.2020

Mr Streeck is a professor for virology and the director of the Institute of virology and HIV Research at the University Bonn. He explained the methodology of his new study in Heinsberg, the “epicentre” of Germany’s COVID-19 outbreak, and talked about potential plans for a country to move forward gradually in getting back to a “normal” life.

These research findings have already provided some indication on how the virus works, as Streeck clarified:

“There is no significant risk of catching the disease when you go shopping. Severe outbreaks of the infection were always a result of people being closer together over a longer period of time, for example the après- ski parties in Ischgl, Austria.” He could also not find any evidence of ‘living’ viruses on surfaces. “When we took samples from door handles, phones or toilets it has not been possible to cultivate the virus in the laboratory on the basis of these swabs….”

Do not doubt this my friends. New Jersey is full of sheep. They would gleefully let Murphy show up at their door and burn their houses down while Murphy beats them to death with a hammer.

And you know what? They would blame Trump.

I'm familiar with this motel. It's been in business for decades, one of what's known as Wildwood's "Doo-Wop" motels that are very popular with the tourists during the summer season. I think closing for the summer was a last resort (no pun intended) for the owners.

South Jersey is a different animal. Its more conservative, and supports Trump. BTW, the shore will be open by Memorial Day. If it doesn't, IMHO there will be retribution for the loss of businesses. I wouldn't want to be the ones keeping the Wildwoods closed.

I have that feeling as well, I find it very difficult to believe that a family owned motel that relies on the summer tourism season in New Jersey can survive a year with zero revenue, especially after spending lots of money on renovations as the article indicates. If the owners can actually survive a year, they are also screwing over their employees who rely on those summer wages to pay their bills, they cost me know come in and what they would do about that, strange. Even if they do survive till 2021 they really don’t deserve Business for being cowardly.

I suspect they’re making this decision because they know damn well that nobody is going to be traveling there this summer.

When government pressure lifts the commercial liability underwriters and trial lawyers will make the present “lockdown” look like a luxury vacation.
