Cops Should Enforce the Law, Not the Whims of Politicians
PJ Media ^ | 24 April 20 | Jack Dunphy

In my previous column, posted on April 6, I lamented that the actions of some police officers, ordered to carry out some of the sillier or more onerous restrictions attendant to the pandemic, will further erode the already strained relationships their departments have within their communities. As one might have predicted, things have only gotten worse. Since that column was posted, we have seen police officers issuing $500 citations for the crime of attending a drive-in church service, and others arresting an Idaho woman who dared take her kids to a closed playground. Indeed, social media is awash with similar tales, which are all the more insulting to the average citizen when accompanied by stories of criminals released from jail only to re-offend within hours.

Chasing people away from churches, beaches, hiking trails, and parks, and arresting those who do not meekly comply, is not enforcing the “law,” it is enforcing the whimsical edicts of people unqualified to craft and issue them. When all of this is over, can the damage be undone?

The questions needs to be:

Does your oath pertain to the Constitution or blind obedience to the Commissar of your local Government.

The cops have a rather binary choice in this if the politicians that are on top of their chain of command are corrupt, political and unscrupulous. And at here are many, many such unscrupulous politicians who are the mayors and governors on top of the cop’s chain of command. Their choice is to follow the orders given...which protects the ability to pay their bills, mortgages, maintain their pensions and take care of their families...or not follow those orders and be fired for insubordination. Those mayors and governors are more than willing to make examples of them.

Interestingly, sheriffs are a different beast...they are elected in their own right and are often very different in the way they approach political issues than the mostly leftist mayors and often leftist governors.

America’s supreme law is the Constitution. As the Constitution has been suspended by politicians and a few dishonorable judges — and they always have a “good reason” to do so — there is no law ... only politicians’ and judges’ decisions, orders, fiats, dictates, mandates, whims and wet dreams come to life.

Someone in the talk radio business should do a chain interview starting with the offending officer. Who told you to arrest these people? On the the next, you told the officer to do that, who told you that you should do that? and on up the food chain. I suspect that the buck will stop either with the original COP or with his commanding officer. COPs have a lot of discretion when it comes to arresting people. They don’t always arrest or cite people who have broken some law or rule or what-have-you.
If it’s the line officer they should be drummed out. If it’s a higher up they should be exposed and shamed. We don’t need anyone who enjoys being a jackbooted thug.

Politicians think they ARE the law! Power goes to their heads and they become the petty, tin-plated dictators that we say we despise.

stop creating a boogie-man to scare the population in order for you to get your jollies watching them jump....

Law officers are patriots and uphold the law !

they do not want anything to do with these unconstitutional orders by these totalitarian governor’s or mayors

This will be coming more and more to as America reopens and stupid Democrats want to try to keep everything locked down

With all due respect to our hard-working cops, they need to get themselves up to speed on the Constitution’s division of federal and state powers with respect to enforcing the law.

Cops also need to be able to get advice from Constitution-respecting judges, such judges not necessarily easy to find.

Insights welcome.

Consider this, for what it’s worth. The cops are browbeat by their departments and the politicians to enforce these edicts. If they don’t, they to get in trouble, but by enforcing them people rise up, get angry and they get these things removed. I only suggest this because there is a cop humor page on Facebook and there are plenty of Memes indicating the cops do not want to enforce these restrictions.

I come to the sad conclusion law enforcement will always look after their backs first. Just consider what happened at WACO. Would cops help enforce racial laws if they were ordered to do so? I am not sure they would not.

Waco. Elian Gonzales. Ruby Ridge. 10 cop cars showing up at a drive in church service. Portland cops refusing to arrest ANTIFA terrorists.

Re: Does your oath pertain to the Constitution or blind obedience to the Commissar of your local Government.

I have come to prefer referring to this issue as:
obedience to the_Party ; this is what the subjects of communist regimes have said throughout history. I prefer to map current events to proper, existing terminology.

It's all about the_Party.

Communist govs have politics and political parties also. The_Party is often the only party. Or it dominates any other parties with power.

The_Party is the Democratic_Party. It's subjects all do as the_Party says to do. Those subject include most of DC, nearly all of the _news_, lots of big tech.

The power governments have seized gives the the power to starve any section of the country they desire. Can’t buy seeds in Michigan? Can’t garden? Stalin’s tactics brought home to the US. Check out Uncles Joe’s starvation tactics.

The military taught us that those carrying out illegal orders are just as guilty as those issuing illegal orders. Many Cops are former military and should remember that.

What nobody likes to talk about is that the U.S. Constitution was drafted for a system of civil government that did NOT have full-time law enforcement officers. The function of a “law enforcement officer” for 100+ years after this country was founded was NOT to protect the citizenry. It was to protect the rights of accused criminals (by ensuring they had trials by jury) from citizens who were perfectly capable of protecting themselves.
