I had to fill up both of my vehicles in early February and now I look at the fuel guages above half and gas hit $1.59 at Kroger early this week. Wish I had an underground tank.

“It’s time we all became scofflaws. This lockdown is officially insane. Let’s get back to work!!!”

Agreed.

Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!

I had an MG. I could get from Disneyland to Knotts Berry Farm without breaking down. Forget about driving in the rain.

He had similar experiences. Morris Garage hit the skids and he had a very difficult time getting parts. He once chewed-up the brakes and had to garage it for nine months before the needed part turned up in a California junkyard.

The police around here are mostly “social distancing”, and will not answers calls to fender-bender type accidents, so as not to risk exposure. Going 10-15 mph over the speed limit on the major city roads seems to be mostly acceptable the past few weeks, and have not seen any LEO out watching.

Modern gasoline doesn’t store very well even with additives - unfortunately.

“But officer...I wasn’t running from you. I was simply trying to maintain a socially acceptable distance from you.”

I like the excuse of “I thought you were trying to return my ex-wife to me...”

On our first trip to Germany, my mother in law took the liberty of renting a vehicle for us as she was going to ride with us on a tour. She rented a VW bus. I swear that thing couldn’t possibly get out of it’s own way. On the Autobahn, I was almost flooring it but had to limit myself to the far right lane. Anything and everything was passing us as though we were standing still. Going up any sort of an incline was an adventure in and of itself!

Every trip after that, I made sure that I rented a Autobahn ready car when we landed in Amsterdam. I wanted to be the one flashing the headlights in the left lane.

Here’s the story about the modified Infiniti that made the run in 26 hours, 28 minutes (airplane lookouts, pre stationed fuel, etc):

I was stationed in Germany near the Dutch border in the 90s. My aunt came for a visit and we did the usual touristy things in the BENELUX area. We crossed the border back into Germany and hit the autobahn, burying the needle at 135. She didn’t say a word... got off my exit and she laughed at me saying: “I wasn’t going to give you the d**n pleasure of screaming, but thanks for the flight!” I love that time in Germany...best assignment ever.

I watched a youtube video about some of the runs a while back. IIRC the one team said they were topping 190 through some sections (western states), and that their "nominal" speed was in the 140 to 160 range. They had improved both horsepower and cooling in their vehicle. They had doubled the fuel capacity and the ability to refuel (twin tanks, twin fillers). They had radar detectors and night vision and support staff pre-positioned out in front of them reporting on traffic, LE, weather, etc.

To make the run and be competitive it is now a big undertaking. Lots of $, lots of people, serious equipment. It's not just a couple of yahoos with a muscle car they bought at auction and a cooler full of energy drinks...

I remember the end of a Burt Reynold’s movie where he took a bet he could get to Boston back to Georgia in 18 hours. Didn’t sound do-able.

If that was back in 75 it could have been me. 225 stunden kilometer. Any rental Mercedes would do that.

This story is fiction; it was an April Fools’ Day joke.
