Latino and black residents in New York City have higher mortality rates from coronavirus, according to preliminary numbers released by the city on Wednesday morning.
The early data shows that of those who have died from coronavirus in the city, 34 percent were Latino residents, while 28 percent were blacks.
Black New Yorkers have the highest crude death rate: 23.1 out of 100,000 people. Latino New Yorkers have the second highest reported death rate, 21.3 out of 100,000. But adjusted for age, the death toll is slightly higher for Latinos, who have a death rate of 22.8 versus 19.8.
The released data represents only 63 percent of reported deaths in New York City because according to the city, the vast majority of cases are reported by labs and often did not have race or ethnicity data.
Both rates for blacks and Latinos are significantly higher than of whites, which have a crude death rate of 15.7 per 100,000, and an age-adjusted death rate of 10.2
Asians have the lowest death rate from the disease. Among those who have died, 7.2 percent were Asian.

I suspect Asians are significantly less obese than blacks, Hispanics - and whites. Probably plays a factor in death rates.
It is in the graph (image won’t show) under population (2018 estimate).
In Rochester NY...Mayor Lovely Warren finally shut down the playgrounds and took down the basketball hoops. Need I say more.
Excellent point about elevators. The bad advice not to wear masks would have a much bigger impact in an elevator.
Plus the New York health commissioner lecturing us that we were racist for not going to Chinese restaurants or going to Chinatown to celebrate Chinese New Year with tens of thousands of people many of whom had just returned from Wuhan the week before.
The latest numbers reflect a one-day death toll of more than 800, but the city noted that the unusually high increase was due to reporting lags (emphasis added).
Further, if you read the article (now who would do that?!), the higher reported fatality rate for blacks may not be real -
The released data represents only 63 percent of reported deaths in New York City because according to the city, the vast majority of cases are reported by labs and often did not have race or ethnicity data.
While I'm pleased the data with this detail are being presented, the qualifiers are just as important as the details.
I also think it's borderline criminal not to report the racial breakdown. If blacks are being disproportionately killed by COVID-19 because of misinformation, someone should be strung up.
By the way, Gothamist is a pretty well known blog in New York.
Yup another reason to justify socialized medicine.
Time to pivot away from Trump screwed up especially early on as the facts and timeline of events w/ WHO, Deblasio, Cuomo and Pelosi show otherwise. Plus we will get working again May/June and economy will be improving and what do you run Biden on ... Obamacare 2.0. Poor man needs an issue to run on.
Thanks, too lazy to make a table.
AH, Trump is racist! That’s why he delayed doing anything, so as to kill Blacks and Puerto Ricans!

To days ago, they took the basketball hoops down in my hometown. And from the pics I saw...no masks, no gloves...
May I add to your list, the subway system is still open. Less cars, thus more crowded.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City#Race_and_ethnicity
[The city’s population in 2010 was 44% white (33.3% non-Hispanic white), 25.5% black (23% non-Hispanic black), 0.7% Native American, and 12.7% Asian.[254] Hispanics of any race represented 28.6% of the population]
Also, the bug could have burned through the Asian demographic earlier and either went unnoticed or was not reported.
What did NYC officials know and when did they know it?
That is sloppy, on the part of the reporter. The article cited lists Asian fatalities as 8.4 per 100,000.
Hispanic/Latino 22.8
Black/African American 19.8
White 10.2
Asian 8.4
All those numbers are disturbingly high, but especially the first two. Fauci hinted at racial differences in pre-existing conditions as an explanation, but that doesn’t seem to be an adequate one.
Very good point!
That seems to coincide with why Pennsylvania is getting a surge of cases in the Northeast. The huge amount of Hispanics who’ve immigrated there in the last decade from New York still going back and forth or bringing their friends in from New York.
Not sure why they’re the ones getting it the most in New York but could be that they are more into physical touching and that they talk more than anyone else at a mile a minute, spewing a lot of vapor into the air.
“As of 2015-2016, nearly half of Latino (47 percent) and Black adults (46.8) had obesity while adult obesity rates among White and Asian adults were 37.9 percent and 12.7 percent respectively.”

Time to send “The Obesity Code” to every non-Asian home.....< / sarcasm >
These raw results are BS. It needs be done as a percentage of the population by group. Blacks make up about 25% of NYC racial structure. A 28% rate is not that out of line proportionally. I don’t think the asian population in NYC is even 10%, hence a 7% death rate.
These viruses originate in Asia. I have read some articles that suggest Asians have some genetic immunity to them because they’ve been encountering this family of viruses for thousands of years.
It’s more of a nonchalant attitude towards it.
That you dont want to be seen as a “punk”, so fewer take time to heed warnings so they look tough in the face of it.
