Schumer: Atkinson, Roosevelt Captain Fired for Speaking Truth to Power
Breitbart.com ^ | 4/4/2020 | Ian Hatchett

On Saturday’s “CNN Newsroom,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson and USS Theodore Roosevelt Commanding Officer Captain Brett Crozier are examples of people the Trump administration fired for speaking the truth.

Schumer said, “There’s all too familiar a pattern in this administration, when you tell the president the truth, you get fired. This guy was a patriot. This guy stood for — our intelligence agencies have done such a wonderful job. … And by politicizing it, dismantling it, not wanting to hear the truth, that’s — since World War II, we have built up this fine, fine agency. And the president is undermining it. When you speak truth to power in this country, Fredricka, when you speak truth to power, you should be a hero. But in this administration, when you speak truth to power, all too often, you get fired. Ask the captain of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, ask Col. Vindman, ask other people.”

It is interesting to see the breakdown in reactions between those here who have served as Naval Officers and those who may or may not have other military experience. Those of us on the first side are of the strong belief that he wasn’t relieved of command for a simple infraction of a rule, sending a message beyond the chain of command - which would normally merit a dressing down from his superior. We understand that he was relieved of command because when tested in the heat of battle he utterly failed as a commander. Following orders and doing what you are told is not what makes or breaks the Commanding Officer of a Naval Warship. Much more is expected of you than that.

I always hated the phrase “truth to power”. It always seems to mean the opposite.

Guy was and still is an idiot. You go up the chain of command not your hometown newspaper editorial board. Should have been taken off the ship in handcuffs and directly to a court marshall.

“Where do you think the ship is? “

Not in a foreign country and certainly not on liberty all.

They are commanders because they are expected to see, think, analyze and respond as leaders.

The man had at his command all of the resources of an aircraft carrier. He has machine shops, skilled personnel, subordinates tested and proven for their leadership, initiative, resourcefulness and knowledge in their own professions. This includes having a medical staff qualified for independent duty. They can take apart, repair and rebuild aircraft, ships, nuclear reactors and the most complex electronics around. Governors and Presidents and Fleet commanders don't have the immediate access to resources this man had. If they need quarantine quarters, they can go out on the hanger deck and with the personnel on board, build such in short order.

Near as I can tell they didn't do much of anything except sound abandon ship. The CO couldn't even organize a field day with Clorox to deep clean his ship.

Right. Atkinson was the “Hail Mary” for that creep Schiff. Atkinson may be in deeper doo doo than this like FISA warrant fraud.

what were the specific legal issues with the captain?

It's called loss of confidence in his ability to command. It's not a legal determination. It is a judgment call by his superiors that he doesn't have what takes to exercise the responsibilities and commensurate authorities of command at sea. It's a tradition as old as going down to the sea in ships.

If what I have read is correct, several sailors were ill but none were sick enough to require hospitalization.

In other words, he panicked.

If that is true.....

Who needs a hysterical commander in battle?

Now that said, there are many who faced extreme danger and showed heroism but later in civilian life showed no guts.

The elephant terrified by the mouse comes to mind.

So the navy brass might very well have made a mistake in not giving him a second chance...maybe in a lesser role.

Maybe a tour in Afghanistan or Iraq carrying a rifle.

Or a Coast Guard boarding party.

I don’t know much about the Navy, but I would assume that the subject of handling infectious disease on a ship is something that would be standard training for officers. Is this accurate?

I think there was a recent series on FOX that featured something like this.

No need to go there. A carrier has a large medical staff and medical suite on board.

NO ! He was fired for revealing the Combat Readiness Status of one of America’s biggest warships. He should be prosecuted for releasing classified information.

Like Hillary, Schiff, Schumer???

I'm sure that if, God forbid, Schumer were ever President, he would encourage all officers in the military to go around their chain of command and to speak directly to the press.

Right?
