A better way to handle the Coronavirus? (Without plunging the country into a great depression)
American Thinker ^ | 04/04/2020 | By Earick Ward

As the COVID-19 pandemic has caused state, federal, and international governments to impose various degrees of "safer at home" orders to flatten the curve, at some point we will have to begin to discuss whether the cure (economic Armageddon) is as bad as, if not worse than the disease.

While I won't question the medical rationale for making such recommendations, the question for Americans that must be addressed is, when and how will we exit the coronavirus turnpike?

The economic impact of the national shutdown is estimated to displace upwards of 53 million American workers. What will be the impact on American lives as a result of the economic shutdown instituted by the governments' response to the coronavirus?.

Economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis are warning that if the current rate of U.S. job losses continues, the country's unemployment rate could reach a staggering 32.1% by the end of June as the coronavirus pandemic–induced downturn sparks mass layoffs across the nation.

We as a society, and particularly as a free society, need to begin to have the discussion of how and when we will begin to take the off-ramp from the coronavirus shutdown. Lives will be lost as a result of impending financial ruin.

One idea (presented below) is to move away from the strict "one size fits all" model currently in place and toward a coronavirus risk model based in part on the testing that is coming online. While not comprehensive, the following model could provide a method for returning to some semblance of societal and economic normalcy.

As our testing ability improves, we will be able to use results as a mechanism to help businesses open and safely allow customers to return. We now have the ability to conduct antibody tests that are quick and inexpensive. These tests will identify patients who have immunity (IgG antibodies) versus current infection (IgM antibodies). An immune person can likely safely return to work and be out in public, as would also be the case with an immune customer. A five-minute test prior to entering a store or restaurant would allow both a worker and a customer to safely return. A person who has neither antibodies (not yet exposed) would be stratified into a risk category to determine activity.

Author proposes we classify people based on our scientific knowledge.

Confirmed Infected (IgM antibodies or virus detection)

Confirmed infected are defined as those who have tested "positive" for the COVID-19 virus or the acute IgM antibody.  These people need to follow medical guidance, which is either in-hospital treatment or at-home self-quarantine.  They would be retested until immunity is confirmed and the acute infection is resolved.

High Risk (with no antibody protection)

Taking guidance from the CDC, those who are at the highest risk are defined as older Americans, 60 and above, and those who are immuno-compromised.

As Dr. Deborah Birx has also recently stated, people who live in COVID "hot zones" are at higher risk of contracting the virus than other parts of the country.  If you live in New York City, you are at higher risk of contracting coronavirus than if you live in other parts of the country.

Here are the confirmed cases by state. (This is a map showing the numbers)

Older Americans, people with compromised immune systems, and those who live in COVID "hot zones" should severely curtail their social interactions, very similar to many of the "safer at home" policies currently instituted by many states and municipalities.

Medium Risk

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, you should self-quarantine and be tested and retested to confirm COVID-19 or to rule it out.

If you live in an urban population center in New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Louisiana, or California, you are at higher risk of contracting the coronavirus and should take precautions to protect yourself and your neighbors.

If you are healthy but live with someone in a high-risk category, you should take precautions to protect your loved ones and consider testing to know the status of immunity.

Low Risk or confirmed antibody protection

If you are young and healthy and live in a more suburban or rural setting, your risk of contracting COVID is low.  While you should continue to practice "social distancing" measures and wash your hands regularly, you should be permitted to go back to work and begin to socialize in small group settings.

Take temps of every person entering a grocery, restaurant or retail store.

People with temps can be offered takeout - but will not be served.

Everyone should be encouraged to wear mask... with some stores offering ‘mask fashions’...

Install fans and machines to make light mist to discourage large virus loads.

Takeout boxes must be sealed at restaurant and be encouraged to advertise other safeties...

There are hundreds of other ideas companies can come up with to make their products and services safer to the public... then the public can decide...

Right there you have a flaw in the process. Maybe a five-minute test for a worker at the start of a shift is reasonable, but if I am a CUSTOMER then there is no way in hell I’m subjecting myself to that for anything except the most dire of needs.

And if Americans only buy what they desperately need, then 90% of the country is out of business anyway.

“Take temps of every person entering a grocery, restaurant or retail store.”

Why? Temps can be from many things and not just this virus. Did you call for this drastic and ridiculous measure last year or the year before?

I’d imagine many businesses will upgrade their filtration/ventilation systems after this.

Understanding how bio-weapons work will revolutionize our HVAC industry. And many others... Would I pay more to have that safety build in? Damn straight I would...

Karl Denninger is thinking the same way: Reopen NOW. Here's How.

The lockdowns are not going to stop the virus - they serve only the interests of the collectivists.

First I'm NOT talking about government making 'taking temps' a requirement of any store or business. My suggestion is for stores to compete for customers using the new reality ...

Would I shop at a store that took temps at the door? Damn straight I would - - over every other grocery store in town... I'd like to shop without feeling I need a space suit to stay alive. And I'd like the clerk and checkout people to be wearing masks until this virus is under control.

You're right that high temps can be from many causes - I'm not asking stores to be medical doctors... just to err on the side of caution.

If a person comes to shop with a temp they can be offered a 'shopper' who will pick up 20 or 30 grocery items and bring them out to the car...

Papa John's pizza is the first company to offer 'safety' with their food. They're offering 'OVEN TO SEALED BOX' PIZZA... It's brilliant. At this point it's the only pizza I would order. Just wish they hadn't included a picture of a sauce in the corner of the box... but ad agencies are not the brightest bulbs in the pack...

We were told No hair cuts, salon services, Hobby Lobby closed so no fabric. Joann’a is not offering online to home, curb or store pick up. Freaking 2 hr round trip.

I’m was a quilter until hand surgery damaged dominate hand, have fabric, but NO iron on Heavy Interfacing, Thread won’t last long. No elastic, they want fabric ties. High heat and elastic is not compatible. Since I’m high risk self quarantined 3 weeks ago. Go to Kroger’s for pick up groceries, hubby goes to Navy base for Meds.

I see several specialist, and those 6 months check ups are due. Just renew scripts 90 days. Don’t forget my 2 dogs need Flea, tic and Heart worm meds.

If they are tracking phones is just turning them off enough. GPS is the tracking system. I already have it turned off. Car has On Star.

Our super brilliant Mayor in Louisville showed us the most amazing stats last night:

47,000 deaths in Kentucky if we’d done nothing.
13,000 deaths with moderate social distancing.
2,000 deaths if we have STRICT social distancing for 3 months.

Oh, really? What if we VERY VERY STRICTLY Stayed at home for a year? Would that prevent ALL deaths?

We don’t know that 47,000 would have died.
Why can’t we be happy to have saved 34,000 lives?
Who gets to decide how many get to live?

We need to get out there and FACE the Peril!

With this in place we will see intentional infections. If you are young and in good health the risk of serious complications is far outweighed by the opportunity presented by being part of the Corona elite (those who have a Corona passport).

All of which are cause for staying home and not circulating one of the 237000 varieties of creeping crud that constantly keep our civilization in a state of infection.

After two weeks of social distancing my personal health has improved dramatically. I was never for the most part really ill, just constantly feeling a bit off, one way or another.

“the new reality”

There is no “new reality”. You can make crap up, but that isn’t realistic. It’s still childish fantasy.

Totally agree. People should stay home if at all possible when they think they are infectious. It’s only being a decent human being to not knowingly spread disease.

“My company will start taking temps on Monday. “

Which will have zero affect on disease transmission. By the time someone has a temp, they’ve already exposed others. Fact is, we’ve all already have been exposed. There is no way we all have not been exposed.
