Trump backs infrastructure bill as next phase of coronavirus relief

President Trump on Tuesday encouraged Congress to pass a $2 trillion infrastructure bill as the next piece of legislation to boost the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"With interest rates for the United States being at ZERO, this is the time to do our decades long awaited Infrastructure Bill," Trump tweeted.

"It should be VERY BIG & BOLD, Two Trillion Dollars, and be focused solely on jobs and rebuilding the once great infrastructure of our Country!"

Trump last week signed into law a $2 trillion economic relief package targeting small businesses and workers impacted by the fallout of the virus. Lawmakers are already eyeing a fourth stimulus package to try and keep the economy afloat, and House Democrats have zeroed in on major investments in infrastructure.

Democrats have suggested an infrastructure bill could include updates to public drinking water systems and hospital capacity, as well as upgrades to rural broadband in light of increased teleworking and online schooling during the pandemic. The upshot would include additional jobs at a time when unemployment filings are skyrocketing into the millions, Democrats argue.

Some in the party have also signaled a phase four stimulus bill could include other measures left out of earlier packages, such as expanded paid leave for workers and parents forced to stay at home during the outbreak and increased worker protections.

Trump's backing could push Republicans to support such a measure, though GOP leaders have been hesitant to move forward with legislation that might include certain Democratic priorities they argue are unrelated to combating the virus.

But it won't.

THIS! I love the idea of getting our infrastructure up to par, but why is it like this in the first place? Because the states blow the money, like NOLA did with levee money, or NYC apparently did with the money for their medical and rescue preparations after 9/11.

There is NOWAY to make this money go to where it needs to go once the pols get their hands on it.

"With interest rates for the United States being at ZERO, this is the time to do our decades long awaited Infrastructure Bill," Trump tweeted.

It's still debt and still has to be financed. When the dust settles it's not unlikely that Trump will increase the total federal debt by 25% in 2020 alone.

Jeez. I think I support President Trump about as much as is humanly possible. But this?

Obama “invested” in America by filling in pot holes. That’s not an investment. You do not grow a business that way. You do not create wealth that way.

President Trump wants to fund infrastructure too. Why? It can’t be a jobs program. We had unemployment down to 3%. We didn’t need a jobs program. Sure, unemployment is suddenly a lot higher — but for how long? And who is unemployed right now? Teachers, Star Bucks barristas, hotel desk clerks, bartenders, etc. Do we tell those people “learn to code”? Do we tell those people “Drive that bulldozer over here so we can start rebuilding the bridge?”

I don’t think so.

Again it will be loaded up by the Dims with their usual pork/programs for their bureaucrat governed constituents.

And the real infrastructure “priorities”? Forget it. The only “infrastructure” priority in Congress is how much for my district.

Here's the thing though. A lot of our infrastructure was built in the period of the '30s through the '50s during the New Deal and the post-war expansion. Airports and Bridges and highway overpasses and all that. Many are crumbling and a couple have collapsed in recent years.

Something does have to be done, if you go through an airport in large cities these days you'll see they are inadequate to modern requirements, for example. We could continue to do it as a series of individual pork projects, like putting our finger in the crack in the dam and hoping we don't run out of fingers before it completely gives out, or do it in one giant government program. Pick your poison. Trump is a builder and I suspect he'd like to leave a legacy of rebuilding American infrastructure so that's where he goes.

The part I don't like is that you just know that 75% of it will be split between NY and California and many dem politicians will become billionaires over night courtesy of you and I.
