Here's the thing though. A lot of our infrastructure was built in the period of the '30s through the '50s during the New Deal and the post-war expansion. Airports and Bridges and highway overpasses and all that. Many are crumbling and a couple have collapsed in recent years.

Something does have to be done, if you go through an airport in large cities these days you'll see they are inadequate to modern requirements, for example. We could continue to do it as a series of individual pork projects, like putting our finger in the crack in the dam and hoping we don't run out of fingers before it completely gives out, or do it in one giant government program.
