The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of two anti-malaria drugs to treat patients infected by the new coronavirus.
On Sunday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a statement that chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine could be prescribed to teens and adults with COVID-19 "as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible," after the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization. (EUA) That marked the first EUA for a drug related to COVID-19 in the U.S., according to the statement.
Currently, there are no specific drugs for COVID-19 which, as shown in the Statista graph below (accurate as of March 26), has sickened over half a million people. According to Johns Hopkins University, over 720,000 cases have been confirmed, more than 34,000 people have died, and over 152,000 have recovered since the pandemic started in China late last year.

Wow! That was fast.
Paging Half Witt Governor of Michigan!!
No thanks to the trump hating MSM who constantly criticized him for suggesting it 9 days ago.
Also, Gilead deeply saddened.
....the FDA had allowed them “to be distributed and prescribed by doctors to hospitalized teen and adult patients with COVID-19, as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible.”....
*******************************************************
Hopefully, very quickly, this formal authorization will be expanded to allow distribution to physicians prescribing to patients who test positive but who are not (yet) sick enough to require hospitalization.
Hopefully, the doctors will stop hoarding those pills now. That was a problem in Texas, but it did show that these drugs worked.
It would be somewhat amusing if, as a result of HCL/z-pack/zinc regimen, the situation were to be more or less under control by April 12, and the country were well enough healed that folks could attend Easter services and go back to work by then...
My Trump-hating neighbor was blaming him for the couple who ingested fish tank cleaner bc they saw that among numerous toxic chemical ingredients, it contained hydroxylclorine. I replied that I would blame him too. if he called for people to drink fish tank cleaner but he didn’t.
Donald Trump Says Malaria Drug for Coronavirus Has Been Approved by FDA 3/19/2020
bttt
The governors of Michigan and Nevada on suicide watch.
LOL, I live in a liberal community so I avoid political conversations with neighbors (etc) unless I already know that their politics is already in alignment with mine. If TSHTF, I am (with a couple of minor exceptions that I need to address as soon as I can) ready to take loved ones and bug out, not wanting to stick around and try to fight off the waves of EBT card militia. Lying low could make a few hours difference which in turn might make all the difference I need to get out without excessive unpleasantness.
> I thought he did more than suggest it.

apparently so! on March 19, if I read the article accurately. thanks for the correction, and for the link!

I think he was referring to the fact it had been approved in general, but not specifically for use against this virus.
... although this (updated and corrected) AP article states that trump *falsely* stated that HCQ had been approved by the FDA.

(now I am confused again lol)
Dunno about that. Their drug won’t be approved for months and they donated it to the US DoD.
Here is the FDA Emergency Use Authorization for Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine
Therapeutics
On March 28, 2020, FDA issued an EUA to allow hydroxychloroquine sulfate and chloroquine phosphate products donated to the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) to be distributed and used for certain hospitalized patients with COVID-19. These drugs will be distributed from the SNS to states for doctors to prescribe to adolescent and adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19, as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible. The EUA requires that fact sheets that provide important information about using chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate in treating COVID-19 be made available to health care providers and patients, including the known risks and drug interactions. The SNS, managed by ASPR, will work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ship donated doses to states.
Hard to say. Who do you treat? Even if the drugs work the people who arrive turning blue are decompensating quickly. There wont be time to do a G6PD Def. Test so you risk killing a dying patient with the treatment. So Urgent patients are logistically never going to be realistically treated. Sure, you draw the blood and send it but by the time you get an answer many of them will be beyond help. If youve never seen it you perhaps cant understand it but patients like that are crashing. Even if you could just blindly give it to them all it may not do much good at that point, which has been my objection all along.
The question becomes can the drugs prevent the rate at which seriously ill (requiring just Oxygen) become deathly ill. In those patients the drugs could (COULD) be of benefit. You have time to get the G6PD Def. This is where the drugs can help. I have been reading Dr Raoults paper. This is one of the questions they ask. For obvious reasons, the guys much smarter than I am after all.
