Dr Anthony Fauci has rebuked Donald Trump's claim that anti-malaria drug chloroquine could be a game-changer in the fight against COVID-19.
Dr Facui, who is a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, made the claim during an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN Thursday evening.
'There's no magic drug for coronavirus right now,' the top doctor told Cooper.
Earlier in the day, Trump told media that there had been positive results after doctors trialled chloroquine on COVID-19 patients, and suggested the drug could be a game-changer.
'It's shown very, very encouraging early results. We're going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. It's been approved,' he said.
However, Dr Fauci said on CNN just a few hours later: 'Let me put it into perspective for the viewers .. there has been anecdotal non-proven data that it [chloroquine] works... but when you have an uncontrolled trial you can never definitely say that it works'.
He repeated his caution on Friday in an interview with Today, saying: 'Even though the information is anecdotal that they may work, we need to prove it so people would get the right drug that's safe and effective.
'What we're saying is these are drugs that have some suggestion that they may work,' he went on, but that controlled trials needed to be done to prove that they are effective.
The University of Minnesota is looking for people who have been in contact with a known positive case of COVID-19 to volunteer for a trial to test Hydroxychloroquine and see if it is effective in preventing people from catching the virus.
They need 1,500 people to take part in the trial and so far have 150.

Imagine what would have happened to the smallpox epidemic had there been an FDA during Edward Jenner’s time.
But Wait!
Several renown Free Republic ID/MD’s told us yesterday how this drug was approved and was saving lives as we read their posts.
Some faltered/blamed Trump for being so slow in getting this drug out for everyone.
the media gets a hard on trying to take down POTUS over this virus. meanwhile he’s been trying to out China’s dirty practices for decades. Also, he’s the one for tighter border control.
Yet the left and “open borders and sanctuary cities for all” the media cheer on.
Trials should be conducted within the context of making it widely available.
And I suspect Trump is going to win on this.

Bingo. That is exactly what should happen and what I expect to happen. Give the drug to anyone who meets the following criteria:
They test positive for the Coronavirus
They are willing to take it.
Then track that group vs those who turn down the treatment. You would start to the results in a couple of weeks and settle the issue in a couple of months.
If Trump is smart that is what’s going to happen. If he leaves it up to the FDA we will wait a year.
And if that turns out OK then start selling it at CVS and Walgreens and let people decide for themselves what they want to do.

I heard Trump say THREE TIMES: “It may work. It may not work. But we have to try. And I have a good feeling about it.”
He never said it was a “miracle” cure for Covid-19. Just something with promise that needs to be looked into.
Little “Guido” Fauci is afraid President Trump is going to cut into “Guido’s” racket.
A drug does not have to be a miracle cure in order to fight and get rid of a Cov-19 infection.
Part of the continuing infection in someone is (a) the severity of the illness they have (b) which makes it harder for their immune system to fight the infection, (c) but which can be assisted by reducing the worse symptoms of the illness, which some drugs can do. When the upper respiratory system can be relieved of the excess liquid and inflammation the body’s immune system gets a better chance of helping to clear the infection. The patient turns the corner as the most severe symptoms are relieved. That is what some drugs that are not “miracle” cures can do for some folks.
Fauci would have them wait for a miracle cure and have the FDA deny the use of some drugs that will save people’s lives.
Fauci has been saying for decades an Hiv vaccine is just around the corner.

i just watched the press conference and Trump only said that he was hopeful and optimistic that the drug worked, and Fauci said he was fundamentally in agreement with President Trump, that he too was hopeful like the President that hydroxychloroquine was an effective drug, that the drug would be going out for use right away and data would be gathered as the drug was used, and that the ONLY difference was as a scientist he was more cautious about his optimism until he saw more data ...
i’m stunned at the fools commenting on this post who are taking this fake news at face value and advocating that Fauci be fired or even that Fauci has ulterior motives ... I just watched every word of that press conference and Fauci TOTALLY defended President Trump’s optimism and President Trump thanked Fauci for his statement ...
There was no rebuke. Andrew Court and the Daily Mail are pushing Fake News to the many thousands who currently are infected.
The media can try hard but the public is not going to blame POTUS for this virus, period. It stems from a country POTUS has been chastising since in office.
Also, we know he’s all about controlling who gets into the US.
