SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- As worries about the spread of the coronavirus confine millions of Californians to their homes, concern is growing about those who have no homes in which to shelter.
California has more than 150,000 homeless people, the most in the nation, and there's concern that as the rest of the state's residents are being told to stay apart and to frequently wash their hands, the homeless are living just as they did before the outbreak.
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday said it's possible 60,000 could contract the virus. The governor announced he would spend $150 million on efforts to prevent the COVID-19 virus from sweeping through that population.
I hope you get a sense of the seriousness we're taking the issue of homelessness, Newsom said in a Facebook Live broadcast.
Two-thirds of the money will go directly to local governments to spend on homeless services and $50 million will be used by the state to purchase 1,300 travel trailers and lease hotel rooms for emergency housing.
The trailers will be used for homeless people requiring isolation after testing positive for the virus or who are showing symptoms. California also has identified 950 hotels that could lease rooms to local governments to house the homeless.
In Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that the city, through the Red Cross, will provide 6,000 emergency beds at recreation centers, including 1,600 by week's end.
Too many ... lack a basic necessity that will help most of us get through this crisis: a home, Garcetti said.

Stuart Malcolm, a doctor with the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic, speaks with a homeless person about the coronavirus in the Haight Ashbury area of San Francisco on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
Give ‘em a bowl of soup and send them all to a local dive motel where they can be together.
State to spend $150 million to protect homeless from virus

Read the headline.
Knew immediately what state this would be.
Yep.
Could have spent that money cleaning up the needles and feces or helping the homeless into medical care or back with their families.
They don’t care about those they consider lesser than them. Including us.
They will give them some pooper scoopers, disinfectant spray a mask and a pair of gloves and pocket the rest.
Yep. And then quarantine them and issue a Shelter in Place order to keep them there. And then when they don't comply...
Then what?
We apologize for making you temporarily homed, but this is for everyones good.
We will leave you so you can poop on streets again after this clears.
Fine, just keep your grubby mitts out of my effin money.
I am sure the homeless will appreciate the paid state employee giving them a flyer with instructions about how to wash their hands...in the gutter water by the sidewalk where their cardboard tent city is erected.
Ha haaaaa! Follow that check. See which Newsom and Pelosi cronies and family members it goes to.
Newsom probably wants to keep them alive just so they can be counted in the census. /s
If a homeless person who squats in a tent dies of corona virus does it count?
Will there be tp and hand sanitizer stations on the street corners so they can clean up after taking a dump?
Like Cali politicians will ever address the root of the homeless problem. Thinking about it would indict them. It’s socialism, plain and simple. Solve the root of the problem by not adding more to the problem. Get rid of socialism. Cut taxes. Cut regulations. Abolish needless laws. Radically cut government. And for God’s sake, give people more freedom and liberty to live their lives they way they want to.
I heard that the homeless were being taxed for panhandling. They are required to split the cash with the tax collectors..
You are not thinking like a democrat politician.
Give them a lobster and steak (with vegan options) open buffet, seize the Ritz Carlton and put them up there!
'It' Counts as as drug overdose.
Can't have people die of China Flu, China is our friend and personal cash cow, and we also can't have Orange Man Bad be correct about the danger, can we? CAN WE????
Have you no humanity? If he's a registered voter, it counts!
$150 million will buy a lot of blue ribbon committees to discuss how to go about helping the homeless. They might even have enough left over for a few experimental housing tests.
