Coronavirus emergency spending 'is two years of climate financing’, says climatologist Jean Jouzel

French climatologist Jean Jouzel says the swift global reaction to the coronavirus crisis may bode well for the climate as well: It shows that in a real emergency, nations have the means – and the will – to act. "It is just as urgent to tackle the climate problem," he says.

With factories shuttered, airlines grounded and streets cleared in the wake of the coronavirus, there's been a notable reduction in our need for energy from coal and other fossil fuels, both in China and beyond.

Experts anticipate the COVID-19 outbreak will lead to a temporary drop in global carbon emissions but fear the short-term blip could be followed by an aggressive rebound that some are already calling ''revenge pollution'' as activity ramps back up.

FRANCE 24's Mairead Dundas, host of the "Down to Earth" programme, asks leading French climatologist and former vice-chair of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Jean Jouzel whether the coronavirus will lead to any lasting change in efforts to combat the climate crisis.

Is the environment the 'big winner' of the coronavirus crisis?

Yes, in a way the environment is the beneficiary of the coronavirus crisis, but unfortunately only temporarily.

A lot has been done in just a few days to fight this virus. Should we be doing the same for the climate?

As a climatologist, what I see happening today represents hope: €45 billion has just been earmarked as economic aid for companies. To achieve the climate transition in France, it is estimated that an additional €20 billion would have to be injected each year.

Will there be less money now for the fight against climate change?

If it's available for health problems, which is perfectly normal and indispensable, then the same argument can made for the fight against global warming.

ROFLMAO!!!

You’re my cup of tea!!

my God. I’m so old i use that saying now.

When I was about 23 and driving a cab an elderly lady told me i was her cup of tea, while i was bringing groceries into her house.

Her husband was right there. I didn’t think that was nice to say in front of him.

Bro with the way media is today, this picture could be part of the Template of almost every FR (or any) news thread.

And that’s a sad commentary.

A message which has barely started to sink in, for passionate political advocates of all political views/causes: Your world as you knew it has ended.

Well, nobody EXCEPT the self-called "scientists" who are funded by "global climate change hysteria."

No hysteria? No political attention? No money!

The good news is that nobody gives a sh!t about “climate change” anymore.

I've been absolutely shocked, stunned, and in total disbelief that the left has not yet claimed that the virus was caused by climate change.

I fully expected that by Day 2.

It's inevitable, but they are amazingly slow in getting their act together.

This Friday thing...the Greta campaign that had German kids out each Friday of school...has ended.

It’s amazing to note that they haven’t been active or doing much of anything for a month now, and I don’t see them getting any traction in early May when schools start back up.

A pandemic is a real threat; climate change is an imaginary threat.

“I’ve been absolutely shocked, stunned, and in total disbelief...”

Ain’t that the truth! I’m like you...expected it Day 2.

It could be they’re just too deep into their “Orange Man Bad” delusion to think in any other direction. Maybe they’re keeping the message simple for the election.

Zut alors! Zee climatique is not een zee climaxtigue?

I am sure every deceased liberal fascist frenchie in Canada, including Rene Levesque , is rolling over in their grave. ( sarc.)

I love it when the froggies whine, it means things are going right.

I have held this view ever since Trudeau of Dirty Name invoked the War Measures Act in 1970 over the La Porte murder, placing the whole country on a war footing to apprehend a cadre of 14 Quebecois revolutionaries, and thereby causing the liberal fascist Trudeau to win the subsequent election in the Spring of 1971, thenceforth creating Canada as a socialist nation.

MAKE CANADA GREAT AGAIN scares the shit out of the Canadian political establishment, which is why the CBC and CTV do nothing but rebroadcast CNN Trump Derangement Syndrome talking points. I want to see a populist drain the swamp political movement in Canada!

I doubt it. You may have been her "cup of tea", but I'd bet he was the honey that made the tea sweet to drink!

“LOOK AT ME!!!! LOOK AT ME!!!! OH PLEASE, SOMEONE LOOK AT ME!!!”

That is all she said.
