8 Senate Republicans Vote Against Paid Sick Leave for Coronavirus Over Concerns About Costs to Businesses
Newsweek ^ | 03/18/2020 | Ramsey Rouchberry

Eight Republican legislators voted against a stimulus bill in the U.S. Senate designed to provide some American workers with paid sick leave.

The Republican senators—Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, James Inhofe and James Lankford of Oklahoma, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Tim Scott of South Carolina and Mike Lee of Utah—rejected the measure, which the House passed last week.

Still, the bill was approved 90-8 with overwhelming bipartisan support. The sliver of GOP opposition feared that the legislation would put undue financial burdens on small businesses and raise the deficit amid economic downturn from the coronavirus pandemic.

"I think that the paid sick leave is an incentive for businesses to actually let go employees and will make unemployment worse," Paul told Newsweek.

This is an extraordinary time. You cannot shut down sectors of the economy and then not be there to help them.

I don’t believe this is the government paying the employees while they are off sick...it’s the employers being mandated to do so.

It’s like the 1st ammendment freedom of assembly to spread contagion idiots here. These are extraordinary times. My view - total up the cost and cancel that amount of US debt held by China.

Don’t worry. The way this is going, there won’t be many businesses left on the other side to pay the sick leave. This was another idiotic panic move.

Mike Lee sponsored the bill to allow more Indian H-1Bs into our country in exchange for India allowing entry into India of more Mormon “missionaries”. Mike Lee is a chump. Ben Sasse is a chump too.

The pros and cons are debatable, but in this country, at this time, it’s political suicide.

So you believe in punishing small businesses and driving them out of business for the crime of creating jobs for people and not having enough capital to pay them not working while they have no revenue coming in?

“My view - total up the cost and cancel that amount of US debt held by China.”

Defaulting on our debt for the first time in our history. Good plan.

Here. Thank you Tim Scott...give the liberals one inch toward socialism, they will make it permanent then expand it another inch.

The virus is destroying the country but not from sickness. It’s so frustrating I don’t have the words.

Both sides are seeing policies they dont agree with being implemented.

That’s what happens in a war.

Heroes, if you want your job back after this flu thing is gone. Not all small businesses can afford it.

"I think that the paid sick leave is an incentive for businesses to actually let go employees and will make unemployment worse," Paul told Newsweek.

He's right. Imposing an addition cost burden on American businesses at a time when their revenues are in the toilet might qualify as one of the dumbest things Congress can possibly do.

Defaulting on our debt for the first time in our history.

That's not default. It's offsetting compensation due us for negligence against an amount owed - and I am far from the first or only person to propose it.
