Governments love crises because when the people are fearful they are more willing to give up freedoms for promises that the government will take care of them. After 9/11, for example, Americans accepted the near-total destruction of their civil liberties in the PATRIOT Acts hollow promises of security.
It is ironic to see the same Democrats who tried to impeach President Trump last month for abuse of power demanding that the Administration grab more power and authority in the name of fighting a virus that thus far has killed less than 100 Americans.
Declaring a pandemic emergency on Friday, President Trump now claims the power to quarantine individuals suspected of being infected by the virus and, as Politico writes, stop and seize any plane, train or automobile to stymie the spread of contagious disease. He can even call out the military to cordon off a US city or state.
State and local authoritarians love panic as well. The mayor of Champaign, Illinois, signed an executive order declaring the power to ban the sale of guns and alcohol and cut off gas, water, or electricity to any citizen. The governor of Ohio just essentially closed his entire state.
The chief fearmonger of the Trump Administration is without a doubt Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. Fauci is all over the media, serving up outright falsehoods to stir up even more panic. He testified to Congress that the death rate for the coronavirus is ten times that of the seasonal flu, a claim without any scientific basis.

Yeah I take all my medical advice from an OB who hasnt practiced in thirty years
When the sky starts falling, only the king can save you.
There is definitely something wrong with the whole corona virus story.
Been thinking that for days now.
Swine flu deaths in US [2009...Obama]
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that swine flu infected nearly 61 million people in the United States and caused 12,469 deaths. Worldwide, up to 575,400 people died from pandemic swine flu.
I don’t remember stores closing or anything else of the sort.
Record high employment, booming economy.
Election year.
Orange Man Bad.
In this case, blame and clear causality can be established.
The media causes the public to panic, not the other way around.
Yeah, right.
The influenza typically has a case fatality rate of about 0.1%. The coronavirus is approaching 4% fatality. That is a LOT higher than the flu. This, along with the easy transmissibility, makes Covid-19 very concerning.
I would expect a medical doctor to know a little more about infectious disease.
On Mar 15, there were 162,687 cases and 6,065 deaths. On Mar 16, those numbers increased to 182,405 cases and 7,154 deaths. That is the highest daily jump in cases and deaths that I have seen since I started keeping a spreadsheet.
I would say that the infection control measures are completely appropriate. No one is immune, so without controls, the disease would just sweep through and kill millions.
But 9/11 was real, just like the current pandemic. The concern is what should be the public response. Another concern is this epidemic started in December, and the US has been ill prepared to deal with the crisis.
January would have been a great time to seal the borders and end sanctuary cities, then let the democrats deal with the public outcry for opposing these actions.
It’s an absolutely classic move of authoritarian governments (you know, like ones with massive internal spying) The classic move is that they are always screaming about some dire external threat to justify their depredations and policies against the will of the nation.
This is a farce
Obama and the media swept H1N1 under the rug.
Obama could have cared less how many Americans were infected or died
I agree with that 100%.
Unprecedented! Hahahahahahaha!
” The coronavirus is approaching 4% fatality. “
We don’t know that because we don’t know how large the infected population is.
When they say 4 percent fatality rate, they’re saying 4 percent of the people with symptoms. Yet if hundreds of thousands of people have the virus but don’t exhibit symptoms, then the number of deaths is a much smaller percentage of the overall number of cases.
Problem is, we haven’t tested many people - and even now the government isn’t only going to give tests to people with symptoms. So we’re now trying to find out how many people have the virus but have no symptoms.
The influenza typically has a case fatality rate of about 0.1%. The coronavirus is approaching 4% fatality.
4%? Well I heard that 83% of statistics are made up right on the spot. Spanish Flu was about 2.5%. The corona Y2K cold is most assuredly NOT 4%.
I'd say your suspicions are accurate.
The following kind of puts things in perspective.
CDC estimates* that, from October 1, 2019, through March 7, 2020, there have been:
36,000,000 51,000,000 flu illnesses
17,000,000 24,000,000 flu medical visits
370,000 670,000 flu hospitalizations
22,000 55,000 flu deaths
And how about the 2018 flu season in the U.S.
CDC: 80,000 people died of flu last winter in U.S., highest death toll in 40 years.
Same here. I could be wrong but to me it feels like something dark is riding/using this "wave".
Italy cases should be alarming but noooooo. Its just a cold with evil big gov grabbing power.
Case fatality rates are, of necessity, calculated from the number of diagnosed cases. They are not calculated until all cases have resolved, which is impossible to do while the pandemic is growing.
It looks to me like a lot of people are hoping that Covid-19 has already spread throughout the population, and that it is only causing a tiny number of cases. This is wishful thinking. The virus recently emerged—no one has ever had it before, and the hope that it is already widespread and not very serious is not founded on any data.
