RALEIGH, N.C. A man who gave a fiery speech for gun rights two years ago in Greensboro won his party's primary in North Carolina's lieutenant governor's race Tuesday night.
Mark Robinson, who was seeking his first elected office, topped eight other candidates, likely winning the primary without a runoff and shocking pundits. He spent less than other candidates one a state senator who put half a million dollars into his own campaign and he didn't have the statewide platform or political experience of others.
He beat state Superintendent of Public Instruction Mark Johnson. He bested former Congresswoman Renee Ellmers.
"We're not pretentious," he said late Tuesday. "I'm not spreading a political message. I'm spreading a message of strong conservatism."

Robinson looked like he'd take the Republican race without a runoff. He had 32.5 percent of the vote with 98 percent of precincts reporting.
Robinson, who is black, said there's a false narrative about racism in the Republican Party.
"We've allowed other people to dictate the narrative and tell the story," he said. "I've not seen any racism in the Republican Party the whole time I've been in it."
Robinson generated buzz nearly two years ago with a speech before the Greensboro City Council, which was considering canceling a gun show in the months after a high school shooting in Parkland, Fla.
He promised to "raise hell just like these loonies from the left do until you listen to the majority of the people in this city."
Man times have changed and my Very conservative nephews and nieces all have black friends that they made in high school or college or work.
It just didn’t happen when I was a teen in the 80s.
It couldn’t. There was the Italians (and any other white ethnics), the blacks and the Puerto Ricans and and God forbid you mix. Race fights all the time.
I would be lying if I said there wasn’t some racism in me. I wish there wasn’t but there is.
I don’t see it at all in my nephews and nieces. That’s nice.
Nice that you have very conservative nieces and nephews. My nieces are both very liberal....not nice.
And, yes, nice that they don’t see race as an issue. In NC politics, this is a totally new phenomenon too - a black Republican WINNING an election. (even though it’s just a primary election).
It proves that ISSUES not RACE are the primary things to Republicans in NC at this time.
Congrats to the nominee. Can Forest beat Cooper for the governor’s slot?
Lets hope and pray that John James can win the Michigan senate election the man is AWSOME!!!
I live this guy. His gun rights speech was epic
What a great story. I hope theres more of these, a lot more, to turn the tide.
Where did you grow up??
I was born and raised in Colorado. I had friends from the entire spectrum....still do. All that mattered was what you stood for
I wouldn’t call it racism. I’d call it survival
Yes, I believe Forest can beat Cooper on the issues. But we have bad voter fraud in NC which is how Cooper won the last time. Hopefully President Trump will campaign again in NC nearer to November and highlight Forest’s candidacy.
John James is a great candidate. This Texas family supports his campaign with cash.
Yes, John James has garnered some (a little wish it could be more) financial support from yours truly. If we ever start a thread on candidates worthy of financial support, John James would be number one for me.
Yes it was. Another FReeper has given me the link to the video in which he makes his fiery speech:

AMEN!

Thanks for that chart.
And you are right - it’s early in the game.
I hope Forest will strongly identify with President Trump on the issues that matter.
That can bring him through to victory but he will need a LOT more help.
Staten Island
Whataya want me to tell ya.
I don’t apologize for who I am and honest don’t give a damn the way people see me.
It’s what I grew up in and it was survival at school.
I am glad things are better now.
I’m not gonna knock myself out trying to change.
The world will be fine even if I don’t :)
Some other FReeper just now was really shocked.
And I am glad things were different in other parts of the country in the 80s
But you’re right. It WAS survival.
My friend got mugged delivering pizza in the projects 3 blocks away.
So about 20 of us went down there, hit whomever was outside fast and hard (because they started pouring out of the projects like cockroaches out of the ceiling after 5 minutes) and took off.
So they wouldn’t mug and beat the next guy that just wanted to make some money.
I’d better get off this topic before I get in trouble.
Not a problem, FRiend.
Just sayin’ times they are a changin’.
For Republcans to win in this day and time, we really need the black vote and if Mr. Robinson will sway some of the not-as-loony lefties to vote for conservative candidates, I welcome him fully.
