A Maryland man accused of kidnapping and killing a Bethel Park woman after leaving her tied to a signpost in the Nevada desert has been charged federally with kidnapping resulting in death.
John Matthew Chapman, 39, was named in an FBI complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court and will appear before a judge next month.
Chapman is accused of kidnapping and murdering Jaime Feden, 33, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship.
After the killing, the FBI said, he lived at her house and posed as her on Facebook Messenger to thwart attempts by her friends and relatives to find out what happened to her.
One friend contacted Bethel Park police on Nov. 14 for a welfare check at Ms. Feden’s house because no one had seen her since Sept. 15.
Ms. Feden was not answering calls on her cellphone. She did, however, apparently respond to messages on Facebook Messenger, but her cousin said she didn’t believe it was Ms. Feden because the speaking style was different from hers.
Neighbors also said they had seen Chapman coming and going at the house as recently as Nov. 13. Officers searched the home and found Ms. Feden’s cellphone next to a fake CIA identification in Chapman’s name, the FBI said, as well as a backpack containing duct tape and zip ties.
Ms. Feden’s cousin told police about the Facebook Messenger posts and relayed that one message had indicated that Ms. Feden had received a new cellphone number. Ms. Feden’s friend then set a trap, sending a fake text indicating that “Uncle Ralph” had died...

How horrible. Why women take up with people like this I will never understand. That said, I have a long time friend who finally said that she’d resolved never again to go out with a guy who didn’t have a drivers’ license or a job...after she turned on her phone while she was being kidnapped and threatened by a freak “boyfriend” and my number happened to come up first so I heard every word of the conversation and called the sheriffs.
I think Federal kidnapping charges still involve the death penalty, no?

He was guilty of wire fraud earlier. But gosh that’s a nonviolent crime. How cruel to lock him up.

Tie him to a sign post in the same desert and let him suffer as the victim and that would serve as a deterrent to other such freaks and losers. That’s what I favor. My bet is he is a Maryland Dem.not that it would make any difference in his punishment.

Seems now that he was a “MARYLAND MAN” only in the sense that he was recently officially residing in MD (sneaking over to PA to be with this “special” afflicted woman).
Apparently he WAS really a native of PA and must’ve moved to MD when marrying his current wife.
And BTW, the chances of him being a “MD Dem” is remote, as he lived in the furthest reaches of western MD in Oakland. They are much more like western PA and WV (I know, my roots are partly there including practically growing up with my cousins up there).

Thanks for your insight and you are correct, Like you I have roots in western PA and central PA and working experience in BW MD corridor and NORVA. NORVA was conservative when I was there. Montgomery and Baltimore County liberal. Frederick and west conservative. Pigeon holing rarely works.
Actually I meant I know because my roots are partly in western MD including the farm with the Mason-Dixon marker. I’ve been a native central MDer but heavily visited up there in the mountains.
