“We are asking the American public to work with us to prepare for the expectation that this is going to be bad,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlined Tuesday what schools and businesses will likely need to do if the COVID-19 virus becomes a pandemic.

Schools should consider dividing students into smaller groups or close and use “internet-based teleschooling,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call.

“For adults, businesses can replace in-person meetings with video or telephone conferences and increase teleworking options,” Messonnier said.

I've been concerned but did a little number crunching and looked up other numbers and I'm not that concerned anymore.(especially since I live in the boonies)

https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html

Worldwide

2708÷80407=0.03367866 or 3.367866%

Doing the same for the more modern, honest countries gives you.

I've had the flu many times but have never gone to the doctor. Hong Kong has had less than 100 cases. Too small of a sample for accuracy. Looking at the numbers, a lot have not recovered yet. We're not going to know the fatality rate until it's all said and done, plus, many people will get it, get over it and not be part of the statistics.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_mortality_from_H5N1

They break it down by country and it caries wildly. Canada had a 100% mortality rate. One person got it and died. The average was 52.8% and we're no where near that. It mostly hit third world countries too.

The case-fatality rate is central to pandemic planning. While estimates of case-fatality (CF) rates for past influenza pandemics have ranged from about 0.1% (1957 and 1968 pandemics) to 20% (1918 pandemic); the official World Health Organization estimate for the current outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza to date is around 60%.

Too early to tell and comparisons don't work. Conditions in 1918 were quite different than today and so were 1957/1968 really. Also keep in mind, people go to the hospital when they feel like they're gonna die so the numbers are always going to be higher than what's known. On the flip side, people die and the official diagnosis is never known, especially with old people. With the flu, most people don't die from it. They die when the flu turns into pneumonia.

My feeling at this point is that it's just as contagious as the flu, if not more so and as are as mortality rate, that just varies depending on many things. Italy at 3.1% while Japan at 0.5% seems odd. 3.3% is average but 95% of cases have been in China which is dirty, very poor air quality in the industrial areas, overcrowded and ruled by idiot communists.

I agree with you, in fact I believe this will be the norm in 20-25 years.

My statement is that districts have no plan NOW. The Five surrounding districts as of now have no plan for this event. I'm sure they will have at least an outline in about a week.
Most Admin are not problem solvers, they are lazy bureaucrats.

My kids go to public schools and receive extra teaching at home to give them more knowledge and skills for real life.
The 100% home schooled kids will do fine. Public school students barely do what they need to get by. they will have trouble if this draggs out too long.

‘facts, we need facts’. Thanks to BusterDog - had a devil of a time finding it again tho! So much info out there, took quite awhile to find it.

I felt the same way, really like this article. 50404 cases studied.

The incidence of fever is 90.9% , the incidence of cough is 70.8%, and the incidence of muscle soreness or fatigue is 41%. The incidence of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was 14.8%, the incidence of abnormal chest CT was 95.6%, the proportion of severe cases in all infected cases was 21.3%, and the mortality rate of patients with 2019-nCoV infection was 4.8%.

The CDC is right to tell people to be cautious and prepared. But I still (even with number rising) think at times they may be fueling panic instead of making sure this virus is approached logically.

Rubbing alcohol would work. And I imagine many people just pass that straight by. There is also betadine.

Just a thought. Could the variation in mortality between Italy and Japan be linked to Italy’s high immigration rate?

I for one don’t want Betadine on my hands when a skin sanitizer works.

Betadine is great post surgery.

I will have my second toe on my right foot loped of in about 8 weeks. Betadine will play a big role in my recovery.

I pray you a speedy recovery from your surgery. Betadine is messy but it could be a way of people letting you know you are not UNCLEAN. J/K

Australia has a zero COVID-19 mortality rate so far (22 cases, 18 recovered 4 still sick/recovering?).

Overall for cases outside mainland China...there have been 2800 cases with 45 deaths (Iran has 16 {doubtful #} reported deaths w/only 95 {doubtful #} cases) for a very approx “mortality rate” of 1.6% outside of China...compared with regular flu in the U.S., averaging about 1.3%.

Trump is wrong on this

At the top of the news tonight, a rail disaster. At Devils Tower, Wyoming, a train loaded with a dangerous chemical gas went off the rails and has forced the widest area evacuations in the history of these controversial Army rail shipments. Fortunately, much of the surrounding area has been closed to the public for three weeks for renovation to the national park there...The Army and National Guard units are supervising the evacuation. It is estimated that from 35 to 50 thousand people are affected. The families that have been dislocated have been assured that the danger will be over within seventy-two hours. We've seen the Army here, the Corps of Engineers, and the Chemical Engineers...Once the toxic concentration is down to fifty parts per million, then the danger will be past. This means that the park's residents will be back in their own homes by the weekend. Of course, it's small consolation to the livestock in the area, although ranchers have been notified...This means, order your steak well-done, Walter.

And fortunately during this mishap, there have been no fatalities...In a few minutes, it's going to be known as the hot zone depending on the prevailing winds. But as it is, this is as close to the disaster as we've been allowed to get...the Army's Chemical Engineers and the Wyoming National Guard are making every effort to contain the leaking toxins and evacuate an area of almost 200 square miles. Everyone is being warned - stay out of the area. Everyone please, stay out of the area.

Italy so far 11 deaths out of 322 cases

About 3%

I've read 2-3 % mortality rate so far.
