You’re Likely to Get the Coronavirus
The Atlantic ^ | Feb 24, 2020 | James Hamblin

Most cases are not life-threatening, which is also what makes the virus a historic challenge to contain

(big snip)

The Harvard epidemiology professor Marc Lipsitch is exacting in his diction, even for an epidemiologist. Twice in our conversation he started to say something, then paused and said, “Actually, let me start again.” So it’s striking when one of the points he wanted to get exactly right was this: “I think the likely outcome is that it will ultimately not be containable.”

Lipsitch predicts that, within the coming year, some 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But, he clarifies emphatically, this does not mean that all will have severe illnesses...

I have been following what has been going on in China since the middle of January, on the Chinese social groups and otherwise. I understand some Chinese so that helps. It is pretty scary. In this country we have no clue how bad this disease is.

I think the media is pushing this story hard in an attempt to tank the economy and the stock market and get Trump defeated. Not gonna happen.

It's like how they push a nasty shooting; it doesn't make the event any less real.

If anyone has noticed, that Iran 1 in 5 dies. That’s a 20% mortality rate.

They had better up their infected rate.

The normal death rate of the global population is what, more than 50 million per year?

Aren’t many of those deaths really old people who get the common cold and die from it?

I am curious about how this one in particular affects asthmatics

I have asthma and I just picked up some extra inhalers, not that it will help with pneumonia. I'm as good as gone if this hits me, but I am old and I won't feel cheated.

Ditto that..if I somehow manage to contract this, my odds as someone recently diagnosed with Asthma are not good. I have a hard enough time with Bronchitis. I can't imagine what COVID-19 will do to those with Asthma or a similar existing condition.

Yeah I saw that. Started last night with a sharp drop in the premarkes. Wasn't surprised today to see the far left, Trump hating Atlantic, pushing this nonsense about 4/5 billion people getting infected, to further stoke things up. So far less than 40 have been infected in the US, most of them of Chinese extraction.
Do I think coronavirus is going to kill me?
Hell no. Last thing I worry about.

https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

79,553 cases
2,628 deaths (3.3%)
25,215 recovered

Over 50,000 not recovered yet

Of course most of this is China and most of China is either military or factory workers and whatever service workers is required to keep things afloat.

I'm just getting over my second bout of pneumonia since mid-September. Never had it before this. I live on a farm isolated in the country with little to no social contacts, except our 2 year old granddaughter who we are raising full-time.

She brings home the "crud" from her daycare school and gives it to my wife and I. We're both in our 70s. Turned in to bronchitis first and then got infected and turned into pneumonia for me. I was hospitalized twice. My wife once.

Some people are going to die from this new bug. But there are more than enough other flus that will and are already making people sick and killing them outside of this new bug.

Screw the coronavirus. Most of this is alarmist hysteria.

I must have some kind of flu bug.

Just enough to make me miserable and weak at times. Aches, chills, whatnot.

So many different stories about where this originated. One thing has been a constant throughout history; nature has a way of protecting itself using plagues, famine, weather, and other things.

We are over populating this earth in some areas. Building higher apartment buildings to house more people isn’t the long-term answer. Nature may view us as an invading virus so it creates defenses to lessen the impact. If we are to continue to multiply at the rate we are then we must migrate off world to distant planets. This may be the wake up call needed to kick the space race into high gear.

Think of the opportunities! Leftists could all go to some barren planet while producers like conservatives go to a lush green planet. Muslims could have their very own desert planet too with lots of caves, sand, and rocks so they feel at home. Marxist/socialists/progressives/dems will need to find their own planet too. Preferably on the other side of the galaxy. Heck; even the LGBTQ contingent can find their own slice of the galactic pie.

Have I managed to piss off everyone? Who did I leave out?

My bunker is a metal building with a lot of roof leaks and a missing skylight panel.

It’s not my property but no rent.

Let's say only 20% of DFW gets it. 10% of those are severe and 2.5% are critical. That's 38,452 ICU beds that we need. There are about 1,500 ICU beds in the region.

The only way to fix that is with a wartime mentality. The same effort with which the nation quickly built up its armed forces after Pearl Harbor.

Costly in the short run, but great preparation for the future. This virus won't be the last pandemic of the century, for sure.
