Most cases are not life-threatening, which is also what makes the virus a historic challenge to contain
(big snip)
The Harvard epidemiology professor Marc Lipsitch is exacting in his diction, even for an epidemiologist. Twice in our conversation he started to say something, then paused and said, Actually, let me start again. So its striking when one of the points he wanted to get exactly right was this: I think the likely outcome is that it will ultimately not be containable.
Lipsitch predicts that, within the coming year, some 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But, he clarifies emphatically, this does not mean that all will have severe illnesses...

Maybe this time we’ll have a proper pandemic, instead of just another scare.
And most were probably lifelong heavy smokers. I suspect there is a strong correlation of deaths with smoking. Europeans and Chinese smoke like chimneys.
Viruses do evolve, so anything is possible. But extraordinary claims require (at least) ordinary links.
You can’t say “it’s proven that corona virus will wipe out the state of Texas before super Tuesday” and then not post at least one link to a story backing up such incredible claim.
“Grandma Rose died in the late 1970s.
She made the Greatest meatballs and grated stale Italian bread for the bread crumbs.”
I went to a Catholic school. All the cooks were old Polish and Italian ladies who had flappy arms and wore old style dresses but the food was all homemade and to die for.
Every Tuesday and Thurs they made homemade bread and you could smell it through the entire school.
I would give anything to go back and eat that food.
According to the WHO, 32 million people have died of HIV since the beginning of the epidemic out of the 74.9 million who have been infected (roughly 43 percent).
37.9 million people are living with it today. Many of them will likely succumb to Corona.
This is not a drill. These things happen every hundred or so years... the last time was in 1917 - the Spanish Flu which killed more people than were killed in World War I.
Normalcy bias is why we cannot believe that this can actually happen, but it's coming.
as well as Middle Easterners!
That sounds pretty awesome.
Flappy arms and old style dresses..remember them well :)
I remember my Aunt Mary getting arrested for bookmaking at 85 and cursing the cops while she was put in a paddywagon and muttering how you can’t make an honest living in this country :)
Her 2 boys did time. They may have been mafioso animals but they gave great presents :)
ah, youth!
Two of my kids have asthma.
While Im not extremely worried about them catching it due to our rural Midwest location, I am very aware of how dangerous any lung disease is to them.
I am curious about how this one in particular affects asthmatics.
The planet will be uninhabitable in around a decade because of global warming, so either way we’re done. Funny how life works out.

Abject fearmongering. This research scientist wants a perpetual funding gig, and he’s likely to get it. Let’s just see if between 3 and 5 *BILLION* people have the Covid-19 virus by the end of the year. Count me as a “denier” on this one.
In the meantime, we need some solid answers on whether this was an engineered virus or not. If it was, how was it released and by whom?
They cannot contain this, it has already escaped containment even with the over-the-top methods of the Chicoms.
Italy and other countries are not going to weld people into their apartments the way the ChiComs did.
It will get out.
It’s coming to your town and it is not going to be pretty.
The fatality rate is probably higher than 2%... there are numerous factors. If you’re elderly, it is 15%. If you are a smoker... if you have any other underlying disease or are in poor health...
We don’t know who the survivors are... do they live by the sea? Are they urban dwellers? Non smokers? Does it affect the lungs of Han Chinese worse than others as some researchers have indicated?
I guess we’re going to find out.
Be safe.
Exactly right, our healthcare system will be quickly overwhelmed.
Source?
I also heard about Vitamin C. SOURCE
Well, we DID have a 1,000+ point drop on the Dow today. So, "they" have apparently decided it's time to panic the sheeple.
I was watching the ticks at close. Every time we were < a 1K drop, sure enough..like CLOCKWORK, it'd drop back to > 1K drop within seconds.
Nah, they wouldn't want screaming headlines about the economy now, would they?
Literally less than 2 full minutes after market close, I got a Fox News alert to my phone screaming about the Dow dropping over 1,000 points.
Hmmmmm..
I bet they were great! I can remember some of the best meatballs in the world being cooked in Staten Island kitchens!
There are many but this is the historical classic courtesy of Blam

Don’t even let your mind go there.
But getting masks and having them wear them is worth the short term embarrassment they might feel, IMHO.
I was already thinking of getting mom one.
