Romney-Bloomberg: The Unity Ticket America Deserves
thebulwark ^ | 02/17/2020 | Neal Simon

In casting his singular vote to impeach and remove Donald Trump from office, Mitt Romney made history. Now it’s time for him to take a step further. For the good of the country, Senator Romney should run for president as an independent.

With the democratic-socialist Bernie Sanders now the Democratic frontrunner and the political arsonist Donald Trump as the Republican incumbent, there is a yawning chasm that has never before existed in American politics. By retreating to their poles, our two major parties have left tens of millions of independents and moderate Democrats and Republicans unrepresented.

“...for the people who are easily confused on what brand of corn flakes to buy.”

Ha, sounds perfect for the swayable swing voter. Some people vote based on who was last ahead in the polls or who the media says won a debate. Not a large %, but they don’t need many.

Oh, you can rest assured this is coming....but take heart, it will falter, like all other desperate attempts do.

This reminds me a bit of the post-election movement to try and have Trump Electors switch their votes to someone else—anyone else—”for the good of the country”.

I think they should run as independents for exactly that reason.

That should nail the coffin of the political careers of both candidates. Though Bloomberg is 78 so his days are numbered. Romney is 72. His impeachment vote killed any chance he had in 2024.

It would also further split the democrat vote and further demoralize them.

Second Best Election Ever!!!

"They would probably only need to strip a few thousand voters in the swing states to accomplish their purpose."

If you're serious, you assume Trump supporters could be swayed, and Bernie/dems would not.

My napkin scratches show the opposite is more likely. Zero Trump supporters would bail, resulting with as many (or more with converts) from '16. 63 million. Bernie's 20-30% don't budge either, but the middle might....even more moving right leaving scraps of 15-20 % max for an indy ticket like this.

Are blue-color workers, farmers in those midwest swing states going for Romney/Bloomberg ? No way. Bloomberg has just insulted the hell out of them, for starters, and Romney's elitism and complete lack of empathy for them won't sell either.

Why would Bloomberg worth $60 billion or so want to be Vice President. Oh, I forgot that one of his kids wants to work for a Ukrainian gas company.

Dontcha love how the media are trying to paint Romney as a latter-day Edmund Ross?

Problem is, Ross voted AGAINST the political plotters, not FOR them.

Good point. Neither thinks they’re NUMBER TWO ! Both think they’re NUMBER ONE !

Hillary would accept #2, knowing Bloomy might not complete his term.

As long as we’re crafting RINO dream tickets, how about Kasich/Navarro, with Neil Cavuto running Treasury and Chris Wallace as press secretary.

Romney and Kasich are biding their time. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an endorsement of Bloomburg if he succeeds in buying the primary, but I’m not sold that he’ll succeed because all the energy on the left is with the socialists, and Bloomburg is only renting mercenaries who want to pay their bills for a few months. I think it makes more sense for Romney et al to bolt in 2021- 2022 and form the milquetoast centrist party nobody asked for. Bloomburg can even bankroll them as the elder statesman.

I think I figured Bill Kristol out.

He's the type of conservative who panders to bigoted left wing caricatures of the right. So he's the type of conservative the left and the news media adores.

He's not a conservative or liberal. He has his niche were he can make a living off of politics, while not being in politics.

Romney and Kasich are biding their time.

Just like the Bushes and their ilk bided their time until Reagan was out of office.

While claiming Republican senators did not have the "courage" to vote guilty on impeachment, Pelosi said, "Except for Mitt Romney. God bless him. And then the president criticized him for using his faith."
