Ironic - when I was a major, the Chief (4-star) was soliciting a new moniker to replace “airman” - imagine his surprise when an overwhelming majority of female USAF members said, “We’re Airmen.”

I guess "Space Cadets" would be considered "not in good taste".

(It's a joke son. A funny! Nice boy but about as sharp as a pound of wet liver.)

Why not just call them "Spacers"?

I think it should be Astronauts. They’re going to be nicknamed spacemen or whatever, even Trekkers, so you can never control the nickname! But the title could be Astronaut, since our Astronauts were our pride and glory (once upon a time).

Don’t forget, next they will be looking for a song for their branch of the armed services.

Momma, Don't let your babies grow up to be Spacers,
Spacers love smokey old bar rooms and crystal clear vacuum...

Space Troopers.

I don’t think the names of the rank should be that different than other branches.

Well since we still have no launch vehicles for people we should call them ground pounders.

If you’re going to call what they ride on “space ships”, they should be called “space sailors”, for symmetry’s sake.

Not to disparage the idea (it’s kinda cool, actually), but since the manned flight tech to just hop into an X-wing and shoot off into orbit with a moment’s notice (arguably) seems a ways off, how about we just go with what they’ll end up eventually doing? How about ‘Keyboard commandos’? ‘Joystick jockeys’? Or lay out some Star Trek-ish technobabble that makes a good sound bite, for now at least. Face it, we’re not talking about a bunch of Luke Skywalkers here. Nowhere in their mission statement does it explicitly (or implicitly) say that they’re going to be getting in manned orbital dogfights. Be reasonable. Don’t Swift Boat yourself right out of the gate. ‘Orbital Targeting Specialist’. ‘Unmanned Tactical Tracking Officer’. That sort of thing.

DoD are free to choose any word they want. The reality will be chosen by the troops. To wit:

U.S. Marine Corps: Marines, Leathernecks, Devil Dogs, Knuckle Draggers

Navy: Sailors, Squids, Foremast Jacks, Popeyes

Air Force: Airmen, Zoomies, Delta Airlines

Space Force: Space Cadets, Space Cadets, Space Cadets, Space Cadets
