Majority in new poll says they would not vote for socialist: Gallup
The Hill ^ | February 11, 2020 | Rebecca Klar

A majority of Americans surveyed in a new poll said they would not vote for a socialist candidate for president, with the most opposition coming from Republican voters.

Asked whether they would vote for their party nominee who was a “generally well-qualified person for president who happened to be socialist,” just 45 percent said yes and 53 percent said no, according to the Gallup poll released Tuesday.

The acceptance for a socialist nominee, is 2 percentage points lower in the recent poll than when Gallup asked the same question in June 2015.

Democrats are much more likely to say they would vote for a socialist, based on the new poll. Gallup found that 76 percent of Democrats said they would vote for a socialist, whereas just 17 percent of Republicans and 45 percent of independents said the same.

The situation could play out in the November elections, with President Trump and his allies already slamming the Democrats as socialists. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a leading candidate in the race, has also openly described himself as a Democratic Socialist.

The term Democratic Socialist does not appear to have been polled by Gallup in its survey.

One of Sanders’s top opponents, former Vice President Joe Biden, has said that having the Vermont senator on the top of the ticket could create a battle for down-ballot candidates in moderate races.

Gallup also surveyed Americans on their willingness to vote for candidates with other diverse characteristics, several of which are identifying factors for some of this year’s Democratic presidential candidates.

Gallup found that 93 percent of surveyed Americans said they would vote for a woman, a 1-point increase since 2015 when Hillary Clinton was on her way to becoming the first woman presidential nominee from a major party.

"happened to be socialist" is strange wording. Being a socialist (actually a communist) is not some chance event that happened to Sanders. He has been striving for it his whole life.

>>a “generally well-qualified person for president who happened to be socialist,”

how queer

“happened to be a neonazi”

“well-qualified”

What has Bernie or Obama or AOCortez accomplished in the private sector? What legislation did they write or pass while members of the House/Senate?

It’s really down to Bernie and Bloomberg, and everybody is trying to make sure it’s not Bernie.

People don’t “happen to be a socialist”. Its a political belief system they actively chose.

45% saying they would vote for a socialist is still too high.

Somehow the Republicans need to do what they can to educate people on the evils of Socialism.

A young (millenial) author - Justin Haskins - was on Fox and Friends this morning. His book: Socialism is Evil would be a good book to buy and pass around.

Just one of many.

Just say this to those young students with heads full of mush:

OK, your college will be paid for - FREE. But

Think for a minute

Who is going to pay for all those college kids who come after you?

Mayor Pete’s dad, Joseph, was a founding member of the Gramsci Society. I believe he, like Obama, has learned to speak to the Proletariat
“Gramsci was a Marxist through and through. And the bedrock essence of Marxism—the cornerstone of the Marxist ideal of a this-worldly Paradise as the summit of human existence—is that there is nothing beyond the matter of this universe. There is nothing in existence that transcends man—his material organism within his material surroundings.”
“...such goals, like most of Gramsci’s blueprint, had to be pursued by means of a quiet and anonymous revolution. No armed and bloody uprisings.... Rather, everything must be done in the name of man’s dignity and rights.... [The new world must not only move beyond — it must learn to despise] the claims and constraints of Christianity, above all. ...
“Do that, he promised, and in essence you will have Marxized the West. The final step—the Marxization of the politics of life itself—will then follow.” [p.251]

whereas just 17 percent of Republicans [would vote for a socialist]

Uh, shows how utterly corrupt these polls are. No genuine non-RINO non-globalist non-crony capitalist Republican would ever vote for a socialist. Ever

Yup. They have a base that is strong, robust and growing. That is the problem we're going to be dealing with in the future.

The next time the economy enters a recession you can be sure that enough people will panic and join them to put them in control.

I really hate all socialists, Marxists and communists.
Karl Marx even coined the word capitalism so that he could have a boogeyman to compare communism against.

In the end it won’t matter who the nominee is. Like good little lemmings and sheep they will ALL fall in line to vote for him or her. Because Trump is their enemy. PERIOD.

Yeah,me too. I really hate when Sanders calls Trump every type of phobe when he speaks. Sanders is an old stinkin Marxist playing to an angry crowd of leeches. This election will be a test of the American people to save their traditional constitutional liberties or cast them away for slavery.

Why?

I suppose thinking skills are that low. They will see the word democratic OR socialist but many can’t connect the dots.

The worrisome thing is this -— 45% is a HUMONGOUS NUMBER.

If there are potentially 150 million voters, this tells me that there could be nearly 70 million people out there who are attracted to Bernie’s socialism. And I would bet that most of these are millenials.

If so, this does not augur well for our country’s future.

Gallup did that to get Joe Sixpack to not think about the answer much, and Joe told them to get stuffed.

“Happened to be a socialist” mitigates the direness, as if the socialist aspect wasn’t the entire driving force of who the candidate was, but merely a title.

So exactly, how does a “Independent Socialist” run as a Democrat? Sanders serves as an Independent in Congress, yet runs as a Dem.

So, could any other Independent, Republican, Conservative etc., run as a Dem?
