People don’t “happen to be a socialist”. Its a political belief system they actively chose.

Somehow the Republicans need to do what they can to educate people on the evils of Socialism.

I really hate all socialists, Marxists and communists.
Karl Marx even coined the word capitalism so that he could have a boogeyman to compare communism against.
The term Democratic Socialist does not appear to have been polled by Gallup in its survey.
I suppose thinking skills are that low. They will see the word democratic OR socialist but many can’t connect the dots.
The worrisome thing is this -— 45% is a HUMONGOUS NUMBER.
If there are potentially 150 million voters, this tells me that there could be nearly 70 million people out there who are attracted to Bernie’s socialism. And I would bet that most of these are millenials.
If so, this does not augur well for our country’s future.
Gallup did that to get Joe Sixpack to not think about the answer much, and Joe told them to get stuffed.
“Happened to be a socialist” mitigates the direness, as if the socialist aspect wasn’t the entire driving force of who the candidate was, but merely a title.

So exactly, how does a “Independent Socialist” run as a Democrat? Sanders serves as an Independent in Congress, yet runs as a Dem.
So, could any other Independent, Republican, Conservative etc., run as a Dem?

For likely voters this poll question is really would you vote for Trump or a generic Democrat.
That's like asking a woman if she would date a generally well-qualified man who happened to model his life after the character Hannibal Lecter. There is nothing that can balance the flaws in a man who has you over for dinner "with some fava beans and a nice Chianti" or a candidate who is socialist. Judging by history, the socialist is by far the worst of the two. How many did soviet socialist Stalin murder? How many did national socialist Hitler murder? How many did socialists Mao, Pol Pot, and those in Vietnam, North Korea, Bulgaria, Romania, Yugoslavia, and the rest murder? No, thank you. I'd rather "rub the lotion on my skin", Buffalo Bill style, than expose my children and future generations to a life under socialism.
Problem is, young people are not taught the horrors of Socialism, Communism anymore.
They think it is very cool and their teachers embrace it. They are not shown the horrors of once rich countries, now Socialist, like Venezuela on the news or any media.
Boomers know because we saw the reality of it every night on the news. Communists were our enemy. It was a dirty word.

When I met one of my father’s cousins (then about 50), I asked him what it was like after so long to be free of the Communist government. His reply was, “Same wall, different wallpaper.”
I apply that to all of the various stripes of Socialism. They can call themselves whatever the F they want to, but they ALL have a basis in lies, in the coercive seizure of the work product of others, and (ultimately, when all of that fails) in murder. They violate 3 of the 10 Commandments from the very start (and add to that with their assault on religion, because their just cannot be anything or anyone greater than the Party).
Oh, BTW, if any of these numbnuts useLESS idiots voting for Sanders or similar Communists start spouting off about “democratic socialism” in the Nordic countries, or elsewhere in Europe, put them in their place by saying that these countries are NOT socialist in any meaningful way; they are, instead, merely welfare states. Oh, some of the parties (in or out of power) may have the word “socialist” or the word “democratic” (or both) in their name, but that is just plain advertising. It is NOT reflective of the reality.
What is shocking, almost beyond belief, is that ONLY 53% of people wouldn’t vote for a Socialist, and that 45% *would*. While I definitely think that Trump will wipe the floor (A.K.A. “schlong”) anyone that the Dems nominate (and Bernie more than anyone else), I fear for our future. The younger elements of our society did not grow up during the Cold War, and they have (as a group) very little if any knowledge of what Communism and its deceptive sibling Socialism really are. We may find out before long that you can vote your way into Socialism, but you have to shoot your way out of it.
