Merkel's successor steps down

The woman who was widely seen as German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chosen successor will not lead her crisis-racked CDU party into upcoming elections, a party source told AFP on Monday.

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, known as AKK, took over from Merkel as CDU chairwoman and presumed shoo-in for chancellor in 2018 but “has now said she will not be a candidate for the chancellery”, the source said.

She made the surprise announcement after telling a crunch CDU meeting that the center-right party had “an unresolved relationship” with the far-right AfD party and the far left.

It comes after an election debacle in the state of Thuringia in which regional CDU lawmakers went rogue and voted in the same camp as MPs from the AfD to oust a far-left state premier.

AKK “will by the summer organize the process to find the (chancellor) candidate, further prepare the party for the future and then give up the leadership”, the source said, according to AFP.

The source added that Merkel wanted her to remain as defense minister, the post she has held since July.

Merkel announced in October of 2018 that she would resign as head of CDU. AKK was elected as the party leader two months later.

Germany’s next national elections must take place by autumn next year, although the fractious coalition between the CDU, its Bavarian CSU allies and the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) may not hold until then.

The CDU has been in turmoil ever since the Thuringia fiasco, which broke a political taboo in Germany where mainstream parties have always ruled out cooperating with the AfD.

Merkel called the vote in Thuringia “unforgivable” and said the outcome “must be reversed”.

Yeah, she has to transplant some nasturtiums.

I don’t understand German politics. For that I’m thankful.

Merkel’s gang is considered “center-right”?!? I’m not sure I even want to know what’s considered far left in Germany then.

SPD is the Socialist Party which is generally called Democratic Socialists. No political party in Germany is a truly right wing party (as we understand the term in the US).

Now just a cotton pickin’ minit here. Let’s be fair. Ugly, Angela Merkel definitely is, but she is no lesbian. I know this for a fact, because she is a “naturalist,” which means she publicly shows more of her body than anyone wants to see. And so does her husband, who has also been photographed in the nude. And he does have a penis, as I can readily attest from the newspaper photos that I’ve seen. For him, that is an accomplishment, such as it is. An ugly lesbian would be a step up for a German Chancelor, but it looks like we will not have that pleasure. Maybe they’ll find another short one with a mustache and an attitude problem.

If you look at where Merkel is the weakest it’s in states that were former East Germany, places that still remember being under the thumb of the Soviet Union and don’t want to go down that road again...

The more liberal West German states look down on the East German states, much like how liberals look at conservatives and Trump supporters and they are taking action to fight back...

In many ways the Germans have the same issues as we do in the USA...

This is extremely hopeful news for Germany. The country’s only chance is a CDU/CSU/AfD coalition. What happened in Thuringia was the very first time that anyone in CDU had been willing to acknowledge this publicly.

There is a mathemtical ‘number’ now...that will accurately predict a no-coalition government situation, and both at the state-level (in Germany), and at the national level....it’s getting closer to that point.

If you write the logical ‘code’...the CDU can’t ever partner with the far left party, or the AfD, then you add the weakened left-of-center party (SPD), and add the general refusal of around 50-percent of voters to vote left, then you have a non-sustainable and very collapsible government.

Go look at German national voting habits for past thirty years (since the Wall came down). Virtually in every single election...the CDU (right-of-center) and the SPD (left-of-center) get slightly less total votes. They used to combine in the 1970s/1980s to have 80-percent or more. Last election (2017), it was around 52-percent on total combined votes for the two parties. Right now? They’d be lucky to get 45-percent of national vote between them.

So let me get this straight

The state of Thuringia was being governed by the “Former” East German Communists, the CDU and AFD joined together in ousting them in favor of a Minister-President from the Free Democratic Party. This same combination could be governing federally too if Merkel was willing.

And then the media screamed FAR RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! (AFD is a mainstream conservative party to my eye) and said The CDU has a moral obligation to support communists over conservatives! The new Minister-President in Thuringia resigned. And Merkel’s successor in waiting Angela Krump-Clamslapper or whatever her name is, resigned as leader of the CDU because she had ordered CDU to never vote with the AFD (even though they were both actually voting for the FDP).

Do I have that right?

Absurd!

The Mitt Romneys of the CDU need to wake the eff up or else the Greens and Commies will end up taking over.
