Former New York City Mayorand potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidateMichael Bloomberg called efforts to legalize marijuana "perhaps the stupidest thing anybody has ever done."
Speaking at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday, Bloomberg said on the subject, according to WBNG-TV:
"We have a different kind of problem in America, for example. Last year, in 2017, 72,000 Americans [overdosed] on drugs. In 2018, more people than that are OD-ing on drugs, have OD'd on drugs. And today, incidentally, we are trying to legalize another addictive narcotic, which is perhaps the stupidest thing anybody has ever done. We've got to fight that, and that's another thing that Bloomberg Philanthropies will work on it in public health."

Oh,God...please don’t tell me that Doomberg is actually correct on an issue of importance!!!
Shocked he said this. Perhaps a retraction or “clarification” coming very soon. Would be pretty hilarious if the entire dem nomination came down to pandering to potheads.
In legal terms, marijuana is not a narcotic.
That being said, there was no legal pot when I quit so the pot available today might be more addicting than it was when I imbibed. When it comes to the pot available now, I too do not know. Either way, I now recommend that if you smoke, quit, and if you don't, don't start. I hold the same belief with alcohol, which in my eyes is even more destructive, unless one is a casual drinker who drinks quite rarely.
Government has more pertinent issues to deal with. Vice and personal responsibility is low on the order.
I smoked in the late 70s. I didn’t know it was supposed o be addictive. Don’t know anyone in my circle who was addicted. I quit when I got a job keeping people in jail for having pot. Peace officers shouldn’t be hypocrites.
Just one reason out of a hundred why Bernie supporters won’t support Bloomberg at the convention.
OK, I get that he spent about a quarter billion on his campaign so far (and threatens to spend much more). But he's still a stiff and he'll never be president.
Good point. How silly of me.
Oh I won’t argue that point, but it still does not change my original post. There are other reasons that is the case though. If you are lied to about one substance, people wonder if they aren’t lying, or at best overstating the perils, about other substances.
Whether it’s Bloomberg or anyone else, everyone should reject this kind of paternalism. Bloomberg et al can’t protect anyone from themselves. With nothing to gain, there is no reason to cede dominion of ourselves or our choices.
I used to have a worthless neighbor, who got out of bed each morning...to smoke a joint, and probably smoked at least five more over the rest of the day. He lost all motivation. Was on welfare, and that was his game-plan at age 35.
Just as long as the loser pays the $5k/pt as a donation to the current FReepathon. Hell, one way or the other well have it wrapped up in no time! :-)
OK Boomer.
And a short one at that. His sorry commercials are a waste of money and a vain attempt to polish a turd.
True is some cases, but cases involving hard narcotics, I disagree.
I started in the 60s and smoked well into the 90s. I am a programmer, so it kind of went with the profession, at least as far as I was concerned at the time.
