Brawl breaks out as Ukraine's lawmakers debate land reform

Ukraine's parliament is debating a proposed law to allow sales of the country's rich farmland, a high-tension issue that sparked a brawl among lawmakers Thursday.

Proponents say that allowing sales of farmland that are currently outlawed would significantly boost Ukraine's struggling economy. Opponents argue the land could end up in the hands of businesses that would crush small farmers or of foreigners, including Russians.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who supports land sales, says the question of allowing foreign ownership should be put to a referendum.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the parliament building during the debate. Inside the chamber, supporters of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko blocked the area at the front while she occupied the speaker's seat. The confrontation ended in a scuffle.

About 75% of Ukraine's farmland belongs to small landowners who can lease it but not sell it. The rest is owned by the state.

Ukraine former Breadbasket of the Soviet Union.

‘Ukraine has the second largest acreage of farmland in Europe (after Russia) with a total of 41.5 million hectares of agricultural land (about 70% of the total area of the country), of which arable land accounts for over 32 million hectares.’

Always surprised that Russia stopped ‘annexation’ at Crimea.

Crimeans voted to leave Ukraine and rejoin Russia

And we wonder why?

Putin is not Khrushchev, Stalin or others of that ilk.

He has about 185 Million people and is trying to evolve into a regular economy, not global domination

The Crimean war was fought to deprive Russia (Note: Not the USSR which is dead) of a warm weather port. What were the Europeans protecting? Trade, and with the resources available in Russia they lacked the only way to compete was to try and deny them a way to market.

If you look at and understand the corruption in Ukraine that is where the exploit point was for The Deep State, Not Russia. Russia has immense resources, but they are not focused on domination as the predecessors were but a better life for the current citizens. Do some research and note that Putin is a believer in God and he is not suppressing faith as his predecessors have

To those who are ready to tangle, I am not a Russo Phobe nor am a Rah Rah it’s all great. But it is far better than it was and just as with China a well tended garden can bear good fruit and deny the war hawks the fear that WW2 will soon become WW3

Easy fix allow sales only to Ukrainian private citizens. With later transition limited to same for 20 years (or some such).

“” “” Easy fix allow sales only to Ukrainian private citizens. With later transition limited to same for 20 years (or some such).”” “”

The reform is mulled by IMF and Soros groups.
Their primary motivation is to buy land for the pennies on the dollar and to stop Ukrainian agribusiness from functioning. That is not unparalleled in Eastern Europe. The same already happened with other Ukrainian industries. Heavy industries are nearly ruined, 70% of small businesses closed since the ‘Revolution of dignity’.

It appears NATO is for Ukraine joining since 2009 but that effort was slowed by the Obama admin. A new push started 3 months ago and as of now now formal agreement has been made. Trump will probably decide soon.

NATO was unpopular in Ukraine in 2009. Maybe 90% were againts it.

Now they are properly indoctrinated but then again what is the value of Ukraine for NATO?

Adding it doesn’t make alliance stronger.

Dont know. Obama halted all the talks and the new talks started Oct 31 2019 according to NATO press release. If Trump OKs it then its a done deal it seems.
