Ilhan Omar Tweeted To Cancel Student Loan Debt And It Totally Backfired
Forbes ^ | 1/29/20 | Zack Friedman

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) tweeted to cancel student loan debt. Then, this happened.

**SNIP**

Here is a sample from various Twitter users:

“In this country, if one takes on debt it is one’s responsibility to pay it back. Not one’s neighbor, or work mate, or a complete stranger. To do otherwise is to teach irresponsibility.”

“I already worked my butt off & saved to pay down my student loans. I refuse to now pay for the loans of others.”

“It all amounts to the same thing. Stealing from responsible people, to pay off the debts of people who made bad decisions.”

I pay off all my debts, including school. Since when are signed contracts are not legally binding?

“Will I receive a tax credit for the money I have already paid responsibly repaying my student debt?”

“Being forced to pay for others’ student debt after I’ve already responsibly taken care of mine would be a nightmare, not a dream.”

“I’m not voting for anyone who believes PROMISSORY notes should be cancelled. It’s a morality issue for me.”

What is the current student loan interest rate?

Do they differ from various lenders?

I'm not real familiar with it, but I have a suspicion that someone is probably making a killing on the interest rates of some of them.

“Mine were federal. They were 3.5% and 4.3%”

All my life I heard student loans were low interest. Not what I saw when my daughters went to college. My mortgage rate was close to half.

Our economy is booming and we are told that there are more jobs than employees. What is stopping someone who has a student loan from working two jobs and every weekend until they pay their debt? Oh, I suppose I lost my head for a moment, College graduates aren’t supposed to work two jobs. Only single moms with children are expected to do that.

These student loan freeloaders were snowflakes when they went to college and they remain so. Most of them made the bad decision to go to a very expensive college and get a degree in unemployment.

...3.5% and 4.3%

Not too bad...as far as that goes.

Unless one is a recent grad, struggling to find a job to meet that vig.

I kind of think maybe since it's the fed doing the lending, that maybe the interest rate could be down around 2%...enough to take care of admin costs, etc.

But again...not ever having had a student loan, I don't have any skin in the game.

But I do know that my tax money is a part of it...and I will be damned if I want to see it flushed away, as some of these pols are arguing for.

You get a hand up, you should pay it back, or at least keep it from being a burden to others.

An enigma...and I have no solution.

Not even sure it's as big a problem as some make it out to be.

They were 6%

I think that's too much.

I would be more comfortable with about 2%...just enough to cover admin costs.

Well you know where all this will go if they do get power. They could not possibly tax us enough to cover what they want, nor sell enough debt, so ultimately they will just print dollars to cover the expenses and we head down the road like Venezuela, Zimbabwe, the former Wiemar Republic etc.

Mine were 9%. The early 80s were rough for that.
