A bathroom bill to regulate the restroom choice of transgender people has failed in South Dakota. So has a bill that would have required high school athletes to play on a sports team according to their sex at birth, not their gender identity.
But it is a new year and a new legislative session, and a group of South Dakota lawmakers is trying to pass a new restriction on transgender teenagers that the lawmakers say would prevent unnecessary medical procedures.
The proposed law, which is expected to go up for a vote in the states House of Representatives on Monday, would bar doctors from prescribing hormones or puberty-blocking medication or performing transgender surgeries on anyone under the age of 16.
The bill has strong support from social conservatives in the Republican-controlled Legislature, who believe it would enforce a common-sense view: that transgender youths under 16 are too young to begin taking medication or hormones.
But rural libertarians, Democrats, transgender people and the medical community have lined up against it, saying that it would harm transgender teenagers who greatly benefit from those treatments, particularly puberty blockers. Doctors have been particularly appalled; they could face criminal charges and jail time for violating the new law, should it pass the Legislature and be signed by Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican who has expressed concerns about it.
...
Representative Fred Deutsch, who introduced the bill, said he got the idea when he was surfing the internet last year. He said he had heard about people in other states who regretted transitioning from one gender to another, and wondered whether such treatments were offered in his state.
I Googled transgender medicine South Dakota and I found a handful of doctors, not many, that do the procedures, said Mr. Deutsch

It is only common sense that a person with gender dysphoria be treated for their mental illness BEFORE they are allowed to mutilate themselves.
Yay.
ONE out of TWENTY decide to get heir privates chopped off if they are forced to wait until 18.
Compared to what, 17 out of 20 before 18?
I’m guessing by 26 it’s closer to 1 out of 50.
Heck, I did things into my mid 30s that i wouldn’t DARE do at 51.
Like walking to the ferry from Rockefeller plaza at 3 or 4am on the west side just for the excitement of some trouble Possibly Happening.
Idiot.
They should be facing criminal charges RIGHT NOW.
Child abuse laws exist. They cover this.

That was really weird to me as I’ve done exactly that but walking in the opposite direction.
What harms young people is helping the mutilate themselves.
Good!
And welcome to Free Republic!
They’re doing it wrong. Set the age to permit such mutilation and chemical experimentation to be the same as tobacco or alcohol use. No particular age, just exactly tied to other actions of choice.
“Good!”
Very Good!
Read the latest on trans heroine Jazz Jennings...his early hormone treatments at age 6 have caused serious complications in his transition surgery. My guess is if he doesn’t first commit suicide Jazz will have major and likely fatal complications from his “therapy” at a very early age.
Notice how a good number those who oppose the bill have a financial stake in taking advantage of mentally confused minors.
Child abusers in white lab coats: If it quacks like a duck...
A surgeon performing “sex change” operations should be subject to capital punishment.
Isn’t it amazing that mastectomy and castration can be called “gender affirming”?
Sorta-kinda like calling abortion “health care.”
Removing healthy body parts or giving physically unnecessary medical treatments is malpractice no matter the age or mental state of the patient in question.
You’re kidding me!!
For the same crazy reason?
I mean it wasn’t like The Bronx but there’s definitely shady areas and it’s a good mugging opportunity.
The closest I came was 4 mexicans I ran into and one REALLY wanted to hurt me, he had Hate in his eyes, but the others stopped him.
All over a small word exchange.
Anyhow, I would NEVER do this now. One because I wouldn’t make it all the way lol.
It’s almost a shame getting older as things that once made you feel alive, you wouldn’t do anymore.
but I gots to know why you did it?
Sorry this was so long!
Pretty close to the same reason, I was younger (19-22 at that time) and was fascinated walking empty streets that were jam packed during the day. Only time you could really do that was between 2-4am.
Wow.
You see you think you are doing something that NO normal human would consider.
Then you find out other people did the same.
Or maybe we’re both not normal :)
A little excitement keeps life interesting.
You worked up in midtown or was this in another city but the same idea?
I LOVED the empty streets, with maybe a beer in had.
Just you and the cops and the cabs. I felt So Alive!
this was NYC ~1992
I lived in Greenwich Village (with my mom, I was 19) worked in the city when I did work. Was in WTC2 during the bombing, so there was a trauma-therapy aspect to some of it.
WOW!!
I worked in WTC until summer’s end 1992. Had a job in there during college and left for new job at end of summer in World Financial Center.
I LOVED those buildings. How did no one learn from the bombing that another attack could happen?
Clinton went after the 4 guys that did it instead of the terror network.
I HATE the new building.
Cool conversation. Thanks for bringing back memories.
And yes there does sound like a therapy aspect to it.
