U.S. health officials are currently monitoring 110 people across 26 states for the coronavirus, including the five patients who contracted the deadly infection in China and brought it back to America.
The disease, which has killed at least 81 people in China and sickened more than 2,800 worldwide, isnt spreading within the community in the U.S. and the risk to the public right now is still considered low, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call Monday.
We understand that many people in the United States are worried about this virus and how it will affect Americans, Messonnier said. Every day we learn more, every day we assess to see if our guidance or our response can be improved.
The number of patients under investigation in the U.S. has almost doubled from the 63 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said were under surveillance on Thursday. The CDC says 32 people have tested negative for the virus.
While that number is 110, we are certainly prioritizing based on [patients under investigation] that might be at higher risk, Messonnier said.
The CDC confirmed Sunday a fifth U.S. case of the virus a patient in Maricopa County, Arizona who recently traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the diseases outbreak and where the majority of cases have been reported.
Messonnier said the CDC has screened roughly 2,400 people flying from Wuhan to five major U.S. airports and is considering expanding its screening. The agency increased its travel warning for all of China, asking people traveling to practice enhanced precautions.
This outbreak is unfolding rapidly and we are rapidly looking at how that impacts our posture at the border. Were certainly considering broadening of that screening, she said.

Agreed. Did not preclude me from having N95’s, nitrile gloves, goggles, tyvek suits, duct tape, a sprayer and several cases of bleach etc... on hand since the ebola scare. I have the standard healthcare worker protection protocol in place.
If not this one a global pandemic is inevitable. Population size and < 1 day global travel make it a certainty.
I am not panicking. I am prepared for the zombie apocalypse.
Please - share your historical successes as I’m ripe to learn, but have not read of any where escape did not eventually occur.
i.e., the border states, since they are still more or less, wide open
onus probandi incumbit ei qui dicit, non ei qui negat
Since the CDC refuses to identify States I will just presume there is a case in my State.
There is someone here whose brother works for the CDC. Poster said brother has been pretty quiet.
I’m assuming every high throughput screening facility, likely worldwide, is currently testing compounds.
Do your masks have the valve or is it not necessary?
Nothing is 100%.
But I reject that prevalent argument that since it doesn’t work 100% doing nothing is better. Cause we don’t want to be ‘mean’ to anyone.
Need eye protection as well. ‘Glasses’ for seeing better aren’t eye protection from this.
We all have insurance even though we’re great drivers (yes I know the state forces that on us, work with me). Agreed.
Indeed....you deny that escapes occur.
I assert they do and have stated that quarantines slow the spread but do not prevent it.
A one sided debate is no debate at all.
My argument that quarantines only slow progress. Spanish Influenza St Louis (1918). Imposed earlier than other cities and REDUCED the death rate to 70% below the national average. It did not PREVENT the spread.
Escape vectors are impossible to contain 100% unless with limited controlled subjects. Once it is in the wild it can no longer be contained - only slowed. Which is what I stated in my original post.

“CDC has screened roughly 2,400 people flying from Wuhan to five major U.S. airports and is considering expanding its screening.”
Hell, NO! KEEP THEM OUT. PERIOD! And not just Wuhan; all of China.
What the heck are Trump’s people thinking anyhow?
“What the heck are Trumps people thinking anyhow?”
These likely aren’t Trump’s people.
Betcha $5 most of them were with her.
Seriously you can go to the Wikipedia page on Quarantine and there are examples dating back to the middle ages. I’m not entirely certain what you are arguing. Are you against quarantine in general? Which type of quarantine do you dispute the efficacy of? Individuals, groups, towns? Let us, for the moment, assume you are right and a large regional quarantine will have “leakage”. That leakage can be mopped up because there will be spare health care resources available to handle it. The moment it spreads beyond the ability to send additional manpower, the moment you’ve exceeded your supply of ventilators, medicines, staff, you’re SOL. So tell me what specifically you are opposing, and why, or if you’re simply being a contrarian, do say.

I THINK tomorrow in Wildwood, NJ.
Nope no valve. It is for comfort only. N95 is the only thing that matters. The mask is as much to prevent you from inadvertently touching your nose and mouth as it is to filter out the virus in water droplets. The virus itself is small enough to pass through but it is transported in droplets that will not pass.
