U.S. health officials are currently monitoring 110 people across 26 states for the coronavirus, including the five patients who contracted the deadly infection in China and brought it back to America.
The disease, which has killed at least 81 people in China and sickened more than 2,800 worldwide, isnt spreading within the community in the U.S. and the risk to the public right now is still considered low, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call Monday.
We understand that many people in the United States are worried about this virus and how it will affect Americans, Messonnier said. Every day we learn more, every day we assess to see if our guidance or our response can be improved.
The number of patients under investigation in the U.S. has almost doubled from the 63 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said were under surveillance on Thursday. The CDC says 32 people have tested negative for the virus.
While that number is 110, we are certainly prioritizing based on [patients under investigation] that might be at higher risk, Messonnier said.
The CDC confirmed Sunday a fifth U.S. case of the virus a patient in Maricopa County, Arizona who recently traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the diseases outbreak and where the majority of cases have been reported.
Messonnier said the CDC has screened roughly 2,400 people flying from Wuhan to five major U.S. airports and is considering expanding its screening. The agency increased its travel warning for all of China, asking people traveling to practice enhanced precautions.
This outbreak is unfolding rapidly and we are rapidly looking at how that impacts our posture at the border. Were certainly considering broadening of that screening, she said.

I think FR needs to add one of those “I’m not a robot” tests before letting someone post for the first time.
What if you are a robot?
Ding ding! You’re the winner! That was the implied joke!
bleach has a short shelf life, replace
Thanks... Will do.
Cornavirus can’t be any worse than MEghan being there.
Quick research and I will be picking up some pool shock tomorrow. Make your own bleach and in dry form it lasts a very very long time. Will vac pack 1/2 lb packages.
where do you get pool schock?
Lowes or amazon or any pool supply place. It is cheap. Vac packed it should last virtually forever.
Oh and if you are planning on using it also for water purification make sure no other ingredients but for laundry make sure no dyes and for disinfection added algecide and other stuff doesnt matter.
Idk the answer. College kids talk.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
PING!
Soon to be in all 57 states.
From what I understand, the Spanish Flu (and by extension the new A-H1N1 variant) kills by provoking an immune system hyper-response, sometimes called the Cytokine Storm which severely damages the lungs and causes Acute Respiratory Distress (ARD) resulting in oxygen deprivation to the internal organs.
Here is an over the counter (OTC) formula that inhibits some of the major inflammatory mediators, and is now being suggested as a way to stave off ARD. All four factors must be included.
1a) A prescription ACE-2 inhibitor anti-hypertension drug. (Note: Healthy folks w/normal BP would experience a crash in BP, fainting, et al. Those already on other types of BP lowering meds would experience the same.)In addition, it is also recommended to maintain just the MDAR of Vitamin A. Being short of Vitamin A is associated with having an excess of a very powerful inflammatory mediator called TNF-1. But it is easy to take too much Vitamin A, which is toxic. High doses of the provitamin Beta-carotene, which the body converts to Vitamin A, might work as well as straight Vitamin A, and are much less toxic.
-or-
1b) If unavailable, 15,000 IU of Vitamin D* (Note: 15,000 IU is a huge dose of Vitamin D, a fat soluble vitamin. This means excess Vitamin D is stored in the liver, rather being excreted. The half life of Vitamin D is roughly three weeks, and Vitamin D toxicity can cause serious problems)2) Histamine-1 blocker. Benedryl or the equivalent.
3) Histamine-2 blocker. Tagamet or the equivalent (normally used to block acid reflux.)
4) Ibuprofen. Advil or the equivalent, a prostaglandin blocker.
Care should be taken to avoid health foods that can artificially enhance the immune system, something to be avoided when there is the prospect of ARD.
This was extracted from an earlier thread I've lost track of, with some comments on Vitamin D from NautiNurse, and on ACE-2 inhibitors from reformedliberal added, and a flat out guess on Beta Carotene from me...
I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV, nor did I stay at Holiday Inn last night. Despite that, I bought Benedryl and Tagamet yesterday and will buy Beta-carotene today.
Take that for what it's worth.
N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is also well documented. I’ll post some of the studies later.
Cause we all know robots can pass that test.
He is probably being advised what to say and what not to say by the experts in epidemic control. He may want to say more than he is advised to say.
“So that thermometer spreads it if they touch it to foreheads.”
It just keeps getting better, doesn’t it?
Because you pick up immunity to various things in small doses. Someone yesterday called them mini-inoculations. This is a point I can never quite make successfully with my germaphobe friends. They say things like “We LIKE hand sanitizer!”
It’s a basic principle, but with biowarfare the rules might be a tad different. Smaller amounts of contaminant may have enough punch to get through, by design.
