With almost hourly reports of new cases of Coronavirus popping up in American cities it feels as though the enemy is stealthily parachuting in nearly unseen during the night. We hear reports but they seem so innocuous and far away that we seemingly aren't all that alarmed.
However, if one steps back and thinks through what a worst case or near worst case scenario might look like - we might be doing so in the final few weeks of what we will remember as our past lives, before the virus, wishing we would have soaked more of what we once had in, and perhaps even done more to prepare.
It's one thing to get good treatment for Pneumonia at a hospital, but once they are overwhelmed, you're left on your own, and possibly without access to antibiotics. It's a bit scary to think about but our system can and probably would become overwhelmed. With nothing to do but shelter in place businesses would begin suffer, chain of supply would falter, the economy dramatically begins to slow, and then it really starts to enter an area that we have no familiarity with. The Coronavirus could take 9 months to run it's course, maybe a year or more.
If, and I say "If" the number of dead were well into the millions here in the United States the impact to the economy would be far more than we can predict. This economic death would be the second lethal phase to the Coronavirus tragedy.
With possibly millions of homes being dumped onto the US real estate market existing home values would plummet. Most most current homeowners would see their values cut in half, possibly worse. What of the Survivors 401k plans? Worthless? Cut by half? Banking institutions begin to scramble to recover debt owed to them that they now cannot recoup, many fail, real estate holdings become pennies on the dollar. What about the millions who no longer have jobs, how do they subsist?
These are merely the the things we can think through, but it's the things "that we don't know that we don't know" that truly worry me.
I pray in two months this is all but a close call. However, our world seemingly doesn't take the possibly of a deadly pandemic serious, we just don't. We talk a good game but it's all talk. We love to say "when" not "if" it happens, but as we are unwilling to shut down international travel until it would be too late we're just not serious.
I think "it" will happen, but will have been preventable, maybe not this time, but sometime. The "when" is going to surely be our stupidity at play, and unable to heed our own warnings, many will someday suffer needlessly.

Things I am seeing out of China indicates closer to 5% and possibly higher. Higher than 1918 flu levels of mortality, but hey... no big deal. What is 5% of 8 billion people?
Easily. That is something that happens every year. People are used to that.
14 day incubation period - often shows no symptoms until hospitalization needed.
With an R0 of 3.8, then the 8,000 could have infected 30,000 who will in turn infect still more. We still have a week or better to learn if that infection rate applies here.

Best that modern Medicine can do is try to regulate the symptoms to a degree (don’t want to over-regulate) your own body’s defenses as it is our best Medicine
Vitamin C, D, K3 and the B Vitamins (Cod Liver Oil), fluids with electrolytes

Talked with my son about the quarantines in China earlier today. We both came to the conclusion that if it got bad in the US how in the heck to you quarantine a city the size of Houston?
NYC would be much easier to contain.
Maybe it only affects liberals and leftists.

BECAUSE Zero Hedge posting story from Indian twitter source additional confirmation was neccessary. I located this article from July of 2019):
On 5 July, officials at the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) in Winnipeg, Canada, escorted Xiangguo Qiu, biologist Keding Cheng, and an unknown number of her students from the lab and revoked their access rights, according to Canadian media reports. The Public Health Agency of Canada, which operates the lab, confirmed it had referred an “administrative matter” matter to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but said it would not provide additional details because of privacy concerns.
A number of observers have speculated that case involves concerns about the improper transfer of intellectual property to China. (All of the researchers involved are believed to be Asian.) But Frank Plummer, a former scientific director of NML who left in 2015, says the lab isn’t an obvious target for academic or industrial espionage. “There is nothing highly secret there, and all the work gets published in the open literature,” he says. “I don’t know what anyone would hope to gain by spying.”
This does NOT address all points of the ZH article, OR prove that this is an accidental release of a bio weapon, but DOES support the assertion that the Chinese stole biological material and research (along with any other intellectual property they can lay their hands on.) As far as the Former lab director stating that there was nothing secret or significant, well, people can make up their own minds.
We can only speculate if this is accidental, one of those “may the arrow they intended for others pierce their own liver!” sort of things. Perhap the Canadian lab could determine if this originated in their facuility based on samples from the U.S. or Canadian Coronavirus cases.

Yeah, that was considered but this article says a virus not this virus, lots of distortion out there.
Any how, 2% is still pretty bad possibility than goodness it is usually a fraction of the worst case.
